Blackberry Nip Rose

Yippee! Blackberry Nip is a sweetly fragrant purple rose, with the loveliest of names. It conjures up images of restful evenings in a calm summer garden, holding a tiny drink of the yummy liqueur - one of those gorgeously genteel apres-gardening moments...

 Wet, too...
Shy Blackberry Nip Rose

I have several Blackberry Nips - all were dirt cheap, from the rose nursery sale. A standard rose is on the edge of the Island Bed, and I can see it from the house. A shrub version grows in a space by Willow Bridge, over the water from a clump of giant Gunnera. Confession - a third is struggling, and gets completely submerged by submerged Aquilegia foliage in late spring. But I know where it is, and rescue is only a spade away...

Such a lovely dark pink shade.

The flowers are long lasting, while looking quite soft and fragile. And the petals fade most gracefully, before drooping and falling down. Hmm... It sounds like I'm describing the Head Gardener after a tipple!

Not Properly Purple...

The New Zealand daylight is harsh on this rose's colour, as far as digital photography is concerned, so my pictures never quite manage to look properly purple. And it would be cheating to top up the purpleness artificially (hello, Photoshop).

One of my Island Bed standards.

After a long, day working hard in the garden, join me and enjoy some Blackberry Nip. It even sounds healthy. Cheers!
