Madame Alfred Carriere Rose

 Madame Alfred Carriere?
Unknown Climbing rose

I'm certain that the beautiful white fluffy climbing rose on the archway by the house is Madame Alfred Carriere. I've even found her rose label (buried deep in a bathroom drawer). Have made this same mistake before. I buy a rose, plant it, and then am so sure I'll remember its name that I rip off the label and stash it in a 'sensible place'.

A rose with a title...

My early planting memories of Madame Alfred Carriere are confused. I didn't write her name down. Later on I thought she was a Lady Something, a Duchess or a Countess of Something Else, a rose with a title.

Until the find in the bathroom drawer I'd had to describe her as 'Unknown fluffy white rose'.

So this beautiful rose is in fact a Madame : Madame Alfred Carriere. She's available in my local rose nursery, and their catalogue description fits her perfectly. She's fragrant, almost thornless, vigorous, tolerant of shade, and had light green foliage. Her flowers are fluffy (I think the proper adjective is 'cupped'), and are a gentle mix of white and blush pink.

She's a graceful climber and fits over her archway perfectly, sending out strong canes which are covered in flowers. Welcome, Madame, to my garden. Breeder: Schwartz. Year of Introduction: 1879.
