My Burgundy Iceberg roses are some of my latest treasures to be planted in the Moosey Garden. This rose came with great expectations. It was much talked about in the gardening magazines, and for some months I mistakenly kept my eye open for a 'Claret Iceberg' in the nurseries. Oops. Wrong wine!
An Unusual Coloured Rose
Eventually I found some in a rose sale, and, being a greedy rose gardener I grabbed several. I found gaps for them in different areas of the garden. Hmm... It might have been better to show restraint and plant them all together. The colour is stunning, but somewhat unusual, quite a harsh magenta tone in certain light. Other colours from neighbouring plants seem to fight with the burgundy.
Put it this way - planted near some bright red dahlias in the back of the Willow Tree Garden, my positioning of one of the Burgundy Icebergs is a colour design disaster! And I always thought that a big country garden could get away with anything.

I first saw this rose mass planted in a rose avenue at an open garden - there were thirty standards, all in a row, on their own, with no under-planting. They were enclosed by a little box hedge, and looked rather boring (they weren't flowering). At the time I was amused by this designer minimalism. Now I wonder if there was some colour wisdom there!
As with other Iceberg roses I grow, the bushes are healthy, medium to tall, with clean green leaves, and the flowering times are slightly later than 'normal'. I would suggest some sympathetic colour companions. Grey foliage perennials like Catmint? Lavenders? There was good sense in that neat little green box hedge after all? Hmm...

Burgundy Iceberg Roses
Burgundy Iceberg is a little difficult to photograph - the colour varies a lot, depending on whether there's sun or shade, or how old the flower is. And you'll see the connection to the white Iceberg in my pictures. Oops! The occasional white petal!
