Moosey News : October 2007

Dear Subscriber,

Of course it's spring in the garden here. The waves of spring things are as follows - blossom, camellias, daffodils and new lambs - followed by rhododendrons, and the first stirring of the perennials and irises. I love spring!

This month's features

1. Dream Gardens

It started with a book - I stood up and faced my fears regarding my dream garden. Actually I sat down in a comfy chair, and ended up becoming quite fearless...

2. Sneaky Spring

Overwhelmed by friend Jack's photographs of his South African springtime, with Wisteria flowering and Maple trees in leaf, I went out to photograph Phase One of our sneaky springtime - blossom and daffodils. We are certainly a few weeks later than him!

3. Garden Glossary

I reckon that all gardeners make words up. It certainly sounds like that when friends are trying to be impressive by correctly naming the plants in my garden! The Garden Glossary on this website is a serious attempt to explain odd words which pop up a lot.

4. Wanted : More Water Features

Oops. I don't buy into that silly saying 'Less is more', which minimalist gardeners adhere to. I always want more - whether it's garden area, plants - or water features.

5. Spring Crocus

It's one of those mysterious plants which just appeared in the garden. Obviously it came with good intentions, and I must have planted it, but...

Regulars

6. Plant of the Month : My Big Pink Rhododendron

Big and blousy, pink and precious, my pink October beauty always puts on a great show. And I always, without fail, take heaps of photographs!

7. Animal of the Month : B-Puss

My big white boy-cat is so friendly to the three newcomer kittens. B-Puss is their brother, cat-nanny, fur-cleaner (particularly ears and bottoms), bed-warmer, best friend... thanks, B!

8. Garden Quote : Budget Perennials

When will I learn? Buying budget packs of perennials from hardware stores...

9. Garden Gallery : Colourful Flax and Wallflowers

The very best of colourful friends - a warm red hybrid New Zealand flax and a group of half-hardy perennial Wallflowers.

10. Forum Focus : Web-Cam at a Kruger Park Waterhole

In our forum we are allowed to get off the topic of gardens - in fact a certain level of randomness is encouraged. This month we've all been peeping at a waterhole webcam in the Kruger Park Game Reserve, South Africa. Some of us are showing off by correctly naming the animals. It's heaps of fun.

11. Gardening Advice : Do what's On the List

This is great advice for compulsive writers of garden lists. It's so simple I might even take it myself...

12. Searching for Moosey : garden poetry

garden poetry
Hmmm... I don't write serious, uplifting garden poetry - mine is always full of cliches, and sometimes boastful. I wouldn't say I was a garden poetry legend - see what you think!

13. Coming up this month : Water Features and Weeding.

The pond is getting a planting make-over, and maybe - just maybe - construction will commence on the new waterwheel. And while all this is happening - the weeds will keep growing!

Cheers,
