Parnell Rose Gardens

23 Nov '15 3:43 pm
Here's a treat for Moosey readers! Well the rose-loving ones at least. Rose-loathers had best avert their eyes.

This weekend past I took my kids and mother to visit the Parnell Rose Gardens in Auckland city. There are over 5000 roses there, all planted in immaculate (too immaculate!) square beds. It is a great place to look for rose inspiration, as well as being able to note which grow well in Auckland's humid conditions.

Here's a random selection of some that caught my eye. I tried to note the names but there is definitely room for error!

The roses are so beautiful Kerole. What an uplift on a dark and dreary Canadian day!

Our Bach

5 Jan '16 2:04 pm
A few photos of our bach (or crib if you're from the South). A holiday home on quiet coast road a couple of hours from home. The cabin is made from complete logs, raised a story above the ground in order to make the most of the lovely sea views. It is rustic, charming, and made to blend with the native forest surrounds.

My father (not a builder or tradesman!) rolled his sleeves up during the summer holidays, and built this from a massive pile of logs dumped in the waist-high grass. That was back in the 70s. Now the cabin is a retreat enjoyed by my family. It is our usual gathering place for Christmas.

Native Pohutakawa (po-HOO-tah-kah-wah) trees are everywhere. Many hundreds of years old, they flower with bright red bottle-brush flowers in summer. They have become synonymous with NZ Christmas.

What a beautiful and special place.
(Sorry to be a worrywart but do you have a filter on the water tank? There was a story on tv here a few weeks ago about the rare but serious potential danger of unfiltered tank water if it is inhaled. I'm not sure if the organism is unique to Australia or if it is a concern elsewhere in the world.)
