hallo,

newbie to forum - have several unidentified plants but seems i can only post one at a time so here we go with first one. This is from Bulgaria, hot summer cold winter. Is it an annual or perennial? thanks for your help.

Ricinus communis

This plant is Ricinus communis. It is also called Castor bean. It is evergreen (or is it ever-red?) in Phoenix Arizona, where I live. They get about 10 feet tall here. I've also seen it used as an annual in USDA zone 4 and they grew to about 5 feet tall in one summer. The seeds are beautiful and interesting, but are highly poisonous.

It's an Australian shrub - I've got one - I'm not so sure exactly what it is, though. Have a peep at Grevillias and/or Banksias. Best of luck!

hallo,

thanks for reply - but i now know what it is : its a ricinus something. i grew several this year. it likes hot summer sun but have to keep its roots moist . the 10-foot plant, produces small brownish beans in profusion after pinkish flower-stalks. has huge leaves and very thick but brittle stems. the oil from the beans is highly toxic to humans but at the same time small amounts dont half make you produce a number 2!

cheers

karaman
