My turn for a mystery plant

23 Apr '07 3:40 am
Anyone have any idea what this is? It just showed up in my butterfly garden this spring, and I swear I don't remember planting it. It doesn't look like a weed, so I decided to let it go and see what happened. It is getting ready to bloom and looks like it will have spike blooms. The foliage is tinged with deep maroon.

Lobelia?

I would say keep it well watered, be ready to stake it subtly ... and hope it is one of the magnificent large lobelias of which 'Queen Victoria' is the darkest and most dramatic...

What fun!

I wonder how it got there - brought into your garden by a butterfly? Hee hee.

Oh Jack, you may be right. That certainly rang a bell with me. I think it was more likely planted by a memory challenged gardener than a butterfly, Mary. I will let you all know what happens when it blooms.

Question:

And what EXACTLY, my dear Faith, is the difference between a butterfly and a memory challenged gardener?

Good point. They both do seem to flutter around a lot.

Mystery solved.

My plant turned out to be a vibrant red snapdragon. It must have been hitchhiking in one of the pansies I planted last fall. It is just beginning to bloom now and I will try to post a photo later. No time to download the pictures I took last week yet.

One of them thinks caterpillars are darling little babies. The other one doesn't
