Autumn Beauty -Otago14 Apr '06 11:57 am
As a North Islander ,visiting the South Island ,I was overwhelmed by the magnificent Autumn colours everywhere . We stayed overnight at Naseby ,Otago ,and I went for a walk .Naseby was set up when gold was discovered here in 1860s . I enjoyed these gardens, but there was no-one around for me to ask permission , so I hope it is all right for me to share them with everyone .South Islanders ....Guess what...the gorgeous rocks you have everywhere are for sale in the North Island ...A piece of S.I. schist measuring about 1metre by 1metre would cost $600.at a nearby rock supply depot.

There was once hundreds of miners here. This is the remains of the old school house ,looking towards the area where men searched for gold ---after gold had been found , they sluiced the hillsides to expose remaining pieces.

Boot Fence14 Apr '06 12:50 pm
For the quirky amongst us (are any of us quirky ,Moosey ?)
A roadside fence ,miles away from any town ....travellers stop and hang their old boots and shoes on the fence ..This is about half-way along the fence .
One of the reasons I love New Zealanders !!!

Dixie, these are great photographs, and they capture the beauty of the season so well! There are some very special places in Otago - I'd love to visit them. Maybe when I buy my new bicycle I can persuade Stephen to 'do' the Taieri Bike trail - I believe this runs through some amazing scenery, quite near to where you took your pix.

Old Boots?16 Apr '06 4:54 am
We are a much more practical people... we have an expression which (translated) goes "I could throw my old boots after her/him" It means you are keen on that person
THanks for the pics, Dixie - New Zealand so often looks like South Africa! We also had a gold rush in my area, but luckily almost no ecological damage still visible... but the local village, Haenersburg, has the same names as the CBD of Johannesburg - where the next gold rush took place!!!

Hi ,Moosey, We saw the cycle tracks as we travelled ,they criss-crossed the road in several places , and several people were enjoying themselves in the beautiful Autumn weather .I would LOVE to travel at such a leisurely pace because of the special ,unique atmosphere of central Otago .
At Alexandra ,a sign said that nearby was the place where some of 'Lord of the Rings ' was filmed 'Ronan`s place'...rocky and desolate ...
Teecee , I noticed that you are from this area , and wondered as we drove around where you live ?,as you mentioned you had left Dunedin .Though the scenery is incredible from a North Islanders viewpoint ,it would be difficult to garden when water is so scarce.
