Rusty is the inspiration...6 Apr '06 8:29 am
Right- I picked up quickly that Moosey loves animals, then I saw a pic with a sort of fluffy golden retrievery dog and I thought how seldom I get nice pics of my dogs. Then tonight I discovered he is a red border collyand I am smitten. I want one! No matter that in my house the size of a double garage already live a large and gorgeous (usually damp) border collie who thinks my main purpose in life is to adore him, a cross-Bull Terrier (with I think from her personality plenty of Border Colly blood - except her middle age spread might indicate Labrador)and I feel my main purpose in life is to adore her, an arrangement which she accepts graciously, a cheeky cross-Jack Russel who can't accept that he is not the alpha-dog, but knows exactly when he may jump into the driver's footwell and when he may not and, half the time, when my parents are away, a rather highly strung cross-Fox Terrier/Whippety dog who looks like the Duchess of Windsor when you fold back her ears over her head. No cats -we resist that option knowing from experience that Bull Terriers adore cats (for breakfast). Anyone peering through my windows at bedtime or when I climb down from my sleeping loft might suspect an element of kinky in my make-up as I lie down one by one with my animals and wish them goodnight or good morning. And what I love is the time they grant each other, no matter what order I greet them in. (It can take ten minutes to do the rounds.)

I've been reading more about Red Border Collies since yesterday's posting: I did not realise that they are the result of a recessive gene, not a separate breed. I've been on the web, but most reds are redder and rustier than Rusty - and not nearly as handsome! More pics please, Moosey

Hi, Jack!7 Apr '06 10:04 am
I'm an animal lover, too, meaning dog lover, cat lover, bird lover, fox lover, etc. But of all your dogs I prefer your Taubie Bull Terrier lady dog! Because all I've met like her so far, are simply adorable! I have to confess, though, that the first time I met one many years ago,I did't like his head's form, I thought he was ugly, or agressive... ...But after being with him only a little while , I was captured by his adorable personality... He was the dog of the owner of the hotel I was staying, so I had the chance to become real friend with this lovely dog...
But, generally, I adore all the baby faced dogs, like Rusty, or the adorable Golden Retreavers, or any other baby faced darling dog, big or small, with short or long ears...
While I garden in my front gardens by the quiet street, I have the immense pleasure of talking with many garden enthusiasts passersby, with babies, or dogs, or both! I just love to caress all these adorable creatures who come to greet me happily and joyously, babies or dogies!! After they leave, I feel I am on the seventh sky, and I have double as much inspiration and creativity to go on with my gardening! Wow!

Whoops. Sorry jack - I accidentally deleted your photos cleaning up a duplicate post. This kind of shenanigans wouldn't have happened while Bex was managing the site
I hope you can upload them soon. The water dam valley view was stunning.

Pale Orange Border Collies7 Apr '06 1:56 pm
Rusty is a pale pale orange imitation of the proper 'Red' border collies. Apparently this rather pale colouring is common in Australia and New Zealand - we've seen quite a few just like Rusty. Who, as you so rightly point out, is nowhere near as 'rusty' in colour as he could be!
I hope those other dog pictures can reappear. You were talking about how seldom you get good pics of your dogs - but I thought all the pics you posted were really great and natural - dogs standing staring at things, dogs about to do things! Those are the best pictures!
And please keep sending pictures of your lovely gardens. South African plants (e.g. lots of bulbs, proteas and so on) love growing in parts of New Zealand, so us who live here get really keen to see South African gardens!
Keep up that lovely garden, Jack. Cheers.

So pleased when others also botch things from time to time, Eggy! (And I think I botched the dublicate entry to begin with - don't quite know how, but I ssaaww it was there...)Here are the pics again, plus some better ones I found over the weekend:

My only really good dog pic. Doubly has never seen a sheep, but he tries to herd swallows, dragonflies and - at night - bats. He is luckily not clever enough to be frustrated by his lack of success.

Doubly Dog11 Apr '06 1:05 pm
What a thoughtful, intelligent dog! It's a rather strange name - how did he get it? Herdng bats must be fun - I'm not sure that bats are into that type of thing! Doubly looks like a great big softie!

Doubly's name12 Apr '06 8:31 pm
Actually I'm not too certain he is bright... he works on the principle that beauty and charm and being oblidging are sufficient in life. He ain't no working dog... We got him at 18 months with the name Doubly, because he has two white bands across his neck. However for 60 years boy dogs in our family have been named after generals, and I maintain with his make-love-not-war approach to life he is Doubly because he'll never get beyond being a sergeant in the military!!
