Square foot gardening13 Jan '06 11:11 am
I've heard about square foot gardening, but didn't realise that it was anything more that aesthetic / space-saving. Apparently it's good at stopping weeds and therefore keeping down chemicals.
Has anyone tried square foot gardening for themselves? I'd be interested to hear more.

A square garden?17 Jan '06 10:18 am
Bex, I personally think it would be great for vegetables or growing a big balcony garden, in order to gain some space... But what I saw in the site, it is not so artistic, inspirational , or imaginative; only very practical and economical. If I were a gardening teacher though, I would like to create a garden like this somewhere in the schoolyard, in order to teach my students...

I think I have to agree with Liza. It seems pretty sterile to me as well.
I have a very small yard (50'W x 140'L) so finding space for a vegetable garden was a challenge. I do have a small plot used just for veggies (about 22'L x 6'W). But I've learned to incorporate veg plants in with my flowers. I plant herbs like basil right in among other plants such as daylilies.
By doing this it helps me get the veggies and it confuses the critters. Not many insects are smart enough to look for veggies among the flowers. Some things, like garlic and shallots will even protect flowers that are prone to attack by insects.
