Fruhlingsmorgen: size?21 Sep '05 2:02 pm
Hi a newbie here! [ Susan aka the catsmother or catsmum]
I was given a Fruhlingsmorgen for my housewarming on the weekend and none of my rose books are very specific about size here in Oz. Can anyone help woith a rough idea?
cheers from Central Victoria |

Oh well,as no-one seems to have the answer and the rose can't wait indefinitely, I've just hoped for the best and bunged it in a new bed I made in autumn. If it's in the wrong place I can always move it next year
I've got it in with Princess Grace of Monaco, several Bonicas, Cymbeline, Blue Moon, Rhapsody in Blue, Virgo, Seafoam, and Chicago Peace [ I'll probably move that next year...I think it's going to be too bright with the others.... and a couple that are as yet unknown colours. The new underplanting is mainly lavenders, with cuban lillies and Jacobs Ladder [ white] ,allyssum, cleome and larkspur not yet blooming. At the moment of course the roses are only just shooting and the last of the daffs, bearded iris and pansies are still there, so in summer it WILL be pink, white and blue/purple but currently it's still in winter mode:yellow and purple
cheers

Hi Susan -
Sorry you didn't get an answer! Fingers crossed it will fit well in that space. Moosey seemed to shifting her plants quite regularly at one point, tho I haven't heard much of that recently. I wonder if its due to increased vision, or just too much other gardening to do?!
The border sounds fantastic. It would be great to see some pictures of its progress. |

Hi Bex
Yes the theory is going to be fantastic but I have to wait and see how it all goes this summer!
I live in extremely inhospitable country...ex-goldrush territory...NO topsoil... very very hot dry summers and severe frosts in winter. My watering is dependant on rainwater harvested via tank [ 113000 litres / 25000 gallons but that's for the house as well ] and a good sized dam [ currently only a third full after 7 years of drought]
I moved in last December and I've always lived in the big smoke before this, so I have to be a bit careful with my water resources for the time being
Roses do well up here and I've been begging/buying anything else that's both water miserly and frost tolerant.
cheers

Oops - Sorry not to reply sooner, Susan! My Fruhlingsmorgen is just about starting to flower. I don't know for certain, but mine sprawls and drapes, and isn't looking terribly large (compared to the other Fruhlingsgold, which has turned into an over-the-head sized tree! It's a subtle rose, too, for me - I have patches of bluebells underneath, and the blue looks gorgeous with the rose colours.
Good luck with the garden - and with the water resources! Do you mulch mulch mulch to conserve ground moisture?
Cheers, and happy gardening |

Oh goodness yes...as I was told my first week up here...it's mulch or die!
cheers
Susan
who is a happy girl...one of the roses that didn't bloom last summer has turned out...after feeding, pruning and some decent soil...to be a David Austin .. probably Prospero. It is a very small bush, a bit lax in growth but the flowers are large, lush, quartered, deep burgundy and have the MOST glorious old-rose-type scent...and it's COVERED in large buds. |

Hope you had a rose-full summer, Susan, and that your garden is not too thirsty in the height of summer
By the way, Moosey's pages on these roses are here: Fruhlingsmorgen and Fruhlingsgold
And Liza's informative reply is here |
