Bug attack3 May '05 10:21 am
Does anyone know what's eating my plants, and how I can get rid of it? I've cut the infected leaves off but there aren't many leaves left now!
These pictures are of the cornflower leaves; it has now moved onto my sunflower seedlings too
The underside of the leaves sometimes has a green bug buried in the leaf. Help please!!

Hi Bex, I think Pumpkin is right, it looks like leaf miner. The larvae of various types of fly tunnel within the spongy centre of the leaf, between the fleshy out surfaces, leaving either veins (as you have) or bulges. As I understand it, this is not dangerous to the plant as such, but does spoil its appearance. Once inside a leaf I dont think the larvae will transfer to another leaf easily - I think they tend to stay inside their resident leaf until they emerge to fly. So it's adult flies laying eggs that are the problem. So if it is leaf miner, then the goods news it's not viral or systemic. Spraying will help kill the larvae - especially when they emerge. Hope this may have helped. Jeff
