White growth on Carex roots

Last year I grew some Carex comans "frosted curls" from seed and eventually grew them on in a nursery bed. Today I was moving them to their new permanent home and noticed that some of them have an interesting white growth on their roots. The plants seem to be perfectly healthy, so I don't think it's been harming them at all, but it would be interesting to know what it is. It looks to me like a fungus or the remains of some bug or other's breeding activity.
