Fairy Garden15 Feb '06 10:41 am
A huge cedar, with trunk divided in to three, is in a corner. When previous owners paved an area ,the stones and soil were taken up and heaped under the cedar - it couldn`t be mown, and just grew weeds in its deep shade, so I couldn`t think what to do. I started planting ferns which I obtained from my daughter`s bush home in Wellington .
Inspiration came from a friend who said that she hid little things in her garden for her grandchildren to discover. I decided to form a Fairy Garden , and have started forming paths ,and 'hiding' wee houses and other things amongst the ferns, fuschias ,bluebells, etc. I think I`m really a child .

I love the idea of garden fairies! Its great for adults as well as the kids.
Last spring I was even lucky enough to have a fairy move into my garden.... if you look closely at this picture, you can see the door to her house. You'll probably have to click on the picture for the larger view to see it...
The neighbor kids (ages 4, 5 & 7) went nuts when they found it. you can't see it in the photo, but there's also a window and a pebble path to the front door.

Wonderful idea!18 Feb '06 4:26 pm
I have just moved to West Otago and have a quarter acre garden to work up. All I have really is a HUGE walnut tree - potential swing?. What a great idea to put in a childrens' garden for when I have grandchildren old enough to enjoy it with! I make concrete ornaments, but unfortunately fairies aren't as easy to make as others, but I will be including some.

A Bright idea.19 Feb '06 2:40 pm
Sunday afternoon, and thinking --The fairy garden takes about half the available,odd-shaped space, and I need to keep working with the other half. I suddenly thought ---WISHING WELL !!On the internet I found a site that gives you plans and ideas..www.buildeazy.com .It is about 1400mm tall and 600mm wide.
It looks straightforward,so I will take a 'before' photo, and away we go.Smiley is keen to help(I think.) I`m already planning in my head where it will go, and how I will decorate it.

Dixie,
I really like the wishing well. If you could find a plastic pot to use as a liner it would make a great planter! And it does look easy to build. We all have those odd shaped spaces in the garden to fill. Its just a matter of being creative.
Last year we helped the neighbors put up a privacy which gave me the opportunity to put in a very large bed on our side. It also created an odd space around a pine tree at one end. I hunted around until I found an old wheel barrow and used it to fill the space.
Here's a photo of one end of the bed. This was taken last September right after I finished planting the Hostas and it was late enough in the year that there was no point in planting anything in the wheelbarrow, so keep in mind that it looked pretty bare!
