Room for one more?11 Apr '07 3:00 am
Hi everyone, I'm Ellie, a 50-something (yet somehow not-quite-mature ) gardener
living in southeastern North Carolina (US).
Well, "gardener" may be a tad misleading,
it would probably be more accurate to say "plant accumulator".
I confess that I am no landscaper, and I rarely think out a long-range growing plan.
It is my habit to grab whatever strikes my fancy,
and then to try to find a spot to fit it in.
Sometimes that results in wonderful surprises, and just as often, in disappointment.
I recently found Moosey's while doing a search.
I was so impressed with all that the site has to offer, and whilst snooping about,
I bumped into you friendly folks chatting away with one another,
I couldn't help myself, I just had to join in, at least long enough to say "Hello".

The more the merrier!11 Apr '07 6:10 am
Why hello, Ellie!
You sound like just the sort of person we'd love to welcome to the forum! I think most of us tend to approach our gardening with more passion than planning. And ALL of us approach life with a touch of irony and a lot of love. This is a good place to be.
Tell us more about your garden. Those are most impressive cycads in your pots! Very close to where I live (about 50 miles) is the famous 'Modjadji Palm' Cycad reserve, and the home of the Rain Queen, Queen Modjadji, about whom I posted in the forgotten past . However the Modjadji cycads are easy to propogate and plentiful, and therefore have the least WOW factor. But they survive my cold and neglect and thus you will find one in my garden!
What are those amazing 'objects' made of? Metal and glass? One is always looking for new garden ornaments (the choice is actually amazingly limited) and you open new windows...
Welcome on board!
Jack

Welcome to Ellie12 Apr '07 4:28 am
From a former North Carolina resident (Charlotte and Winston-Salem), welcome to Moosey's Forum. Please stick around and post some more pictures. I loved the one you included. What a lovely corner you have created with your interesting paving, ornaments and beautiful plants. You must be fairly near the coast. Hope to see more of you.

Thank you ~12 Apr '07 5:14 am
Hello Jack, Dixie and Faith,
thanks to each of you for the warm and welcoming words.
Jack ~ I feel quite motherly toward my Sagos,
I've raised them from seed, so I've been reluctant to
actually put them into the ground as they are really only
marginally hardy here in my part of the world.
But, as I grow older, and my back gets weaker,
and they continue to grow larger and heavier, it's more and more difficult
to drag those pots into the garage in the coldest part of winter.
I think I'll have to make the commitment one day and take my chances.
Dixie ~ Thank you, I like that word "individualistic",
I will try to remember it. To be honest, the first word that usually
comes to my mind when I try to describe my garden to anyone who
hasn't seen it is "wacky".
"Individualistic" has a much more dignified ring to it.
Faith ~ You're right, hubby and I are at the coast, in fact,
we live on a small coastal island about 30 miles south of Wilmington, NC.,
at the mouth of the Cape Fear river. A really great place to be,
until hurricane season gets busy, we've been here for over 20 yrs.
The "objects" in the front courtyard, I refer to as "glass totems".
They are a joint creation, I assembled the pieces of glass
(re-purposed parts of old 1970's lamps) and hubby did the copper work.

Each totem has a length of cable lights up the center, they make an "interesting" (if other-worldly) light source in the evenings.

Welcome Aboard!!12 Apr '07 5:39 pm
Hi, Ellie, and welcome aboard! I love your garden and its ornaments. Could you post a picture of them taken at night with the lights on? I bet they look wonderful!
And, thanks, Jack, for answering my question about the cycads. I didn't know whether they were cycads or tree ferns!
I really enjoy seeing gardens like yours, Ellie, with artistic and individualistic ornamentation. I'm becoming interested in trying to place mobiles in my garden but I get quite a lot of wind, so I have to consider that! If you've seen the movie, "Twister", perhaps you'll remember the wind chimes in the elderly aunt's garden. I REALLY liked them!!
Please keep the posts coming!!

Not to worry.13 Apr '07 1:28 am
Oh Ellie, no need for embarrassment. We're a rather laid-back, slightly haphazard sort of group. We're just happy to hear from you wherever you pop in. I love your very creative totems. Why couldn't I think of that? Anyway, you might want to think about starting your own thread in either the My Garden and Plants or the My Garden Diary (or is it Journal?) section. That way, we can all keep up with the progression of your garden's story. I know you have a story, so please tell it.

Whew, so I'm not in trouble then??14 Apr '07 2:41 pm
Thank you Faith, I'm so relieved, I wouldn't want to get myself tossed out
because I've been having the GREATEST time, scoping out the site bit by bit,
and I'm just becoming more and more amazed as I go!!
Sooo much to see and read, a seemingly endless supply of eye candy,
so many accomplished gardeners.
I think it would be great fun to start something like a photo journal,
I will try to figure out how to put something together,
maybe a project like this will force me to organize my hodge podge of pictures.
Hi Liza and Gordonf, thank you both for your kind words.
Gordonf ~ Oh yes, I know just the kinetic wind sculptures you referred to,
I've watched those portions of that film several times just to glimpse them again.
Hubby gets nervous whenever he hears the theme music,
he knows that my head will be filling with grand ideas. He's promised me
welding lessons, but his work schedule hasn't been very accomodating.
Have you ever seen the brilliant work of Lyman Whitaker? Very inspiring!!
