A butterfly garden9 Oct '07 4:44 am
Last week I took my family to the butterfly garden. It is the only one in the Southern hemisphere with butterflies from all over the world. The butterflies are in a steamy house that also has wonderful orchids and other plants. The children were given pieces of red cloth to hold out so that the butterflies might land on them.see www.butterfly.co.nz

Hi Dixie,
What a lovely day out for the children! There is a butterfly place near my parents’ house in Devon that we’ve been to a few times and it’s just lovely to wander through the warm air (especially if it’s cold outside!), spotting the butterflies, some of which are so well camouflaged that they’re hard to see at first!

How I would love to be there!!11 Oct '07 6:44 pm
What an experience, dear Dixie! How I would love to be there with you!!
I have visited a similar place in Denmark, many years ago!! I think , I would enjoy it now much better...I was there with my two older children (being very young) and some Danish friends! The place was SO warm and humid!! Suffocating, I would say...

appreciation of nature12 Oct '07 5:43 am
My sister lives a short walk from this place, and we visited her the same day-isn't she lucky !I wrote about her seaside garden elsewhere.
Children can learn from a very early age to be gentle with all creatures and living things, and to observe quietly. At my home,I let them pick me flowers to enjoy inside. They loved picking the lavender because of its perfume.
Dixie.

I walked through a butterfly house in Maryland, and you had to do a twirl in front of an assistant before leaving. He had a wand and tapped bits of you gently to get any stray butterflies off. It was kind of Harry Potterish! The butterflies were flying everywhere, you had to be careful touching your clothes or hair as you walked around. If I can find some pix I'll post them.
It's lovely for children to grow up appreciating soft nature, and having butterflies and beneficial insects in the garden. I love my ladybirds.
