30 May '07 7:09 pm My daughter moved into an older house with enough room for 4 seperate flower gardens and a huge veggie garden.
I was helping her clear the land and moved a pile of leaves at least 3 feet deep - I don't think that yard had ever been raked. In the process, I found this forlorn little spindley rose, about 18 inches tall with with just one little faded bloom. The poor thing was growing up against a tree and in the shade.
When my daughter decided not to stay in the house, I brought the little rose home.
It is L shape, one cane growing straight up and one growing straight out. We planted it fall of 2006. And here is what we have in 2007 - new growth, a third cane and gorgeous blooms.
The cane is rigid, thorns firmly attached. Has a very strong old rose scent. New growth is bronze and thorns are red.
The bud and newly opening petals are dark pink and it lightens as it opens. I thought it might be a bourbon rose.
There are detailed pictures including close ups of leaves, stipule, etc in an album here
