Double-flowering wisteria and other climber updates
18 Apr '07 12:05 am For the first time since it was planted three summers ago my double-flowering wisteria is now beginning to show buds. Yippee! I shall update with images as it progresses.
Also, the dark flowering W. murasaki-kapitan is now showing good bold colour. While W. alba amd W. reindeer are in bud and looking good.
The Campsis or trumpet vine 'flamenco' which has looked like a tracery of dead old sticks upon the south facing wall throughout the winter is now just coming in to leaf.
All the clematis are 'going great guns', of particular note at this comparatively early time is Clematis 'Freda' is already in bloom alongside the emerging Campsis. While all the various C. armandii plants are now going over after flowering their hearts out during the past month or so - "Snowdrift" was particularly good.
But the climber which must surely get my Oscar for March/April this year is Pandorea pandorana alba. Last year, it's first, it did not flower at all. But this year there have been a staggering number of blooms traversing the whole of one side of the greenhouse.

18 Apr '07 7:00 am Looking forward to all the visual evidence - but please don't inspire me too much, as all these wonderful named varieties of Wisteria are simply not available in SA! I've planted a white - yet to flower - and have some interesting seed-raised strains, none of which is sufficiently different or memorable to get excited about. And then my main ones are from cuttings of 'a good dark one' - about as specific as anyone is willing to get around here, but I did know the motherplant when I bought the cuttings!

18 Apr '07 8:24 pm Jack,
Take a look at the climber pages of my web site - it's a start and will get bigger as the summer progresses I can assure you. I'm still a gardener, but I reckon my site is the biggest garden site in Europe now, and it has a different ethos to the myriad 'gardening sites' often created by media companies - and my site was only created last November. Meanwhile some climber images are still in the camera and have yet to be downloaded, I know it might sound bad, but with the gardens opening shortly and everything else going on my picture processing has been delayed. Please accept my apologies Jack.

19 Apr '07 2:17 am Well Michael, you are definitely awsome! I took a peek at your website and Winsford Walled Garden will be at the top of my list of must see things if I ever make it to the UK. Beautiful gardens and photographs.
