Thankful Gardener

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
WELCOME!18 Jan '07 7:29 pm
Hello and welcome aboard, Nondin!
Great to meet a fellow Malaysian here in this wonderful forum community. I’m from Kuala Lumpur and even though we’re so near, I’ve never had the pleasure to visit Sabah and your beautiful islands, but have often dreamt of going to Sipadan Island (looking forward to...one day?)
Hope you’d enjoy visiting here as much as I do and continue to share lots of garden pics, etc. I've enjoyed seeing your lovely garden pictures, great sunsets and beaches!! Thanks and I’m so envious...you get to enjoy the beautiful landscape, seascape and skyscape, all within eyes' view everyday...how wonderful!! |

I just discovered your great pictures! They show a wonderful place that many of us here in Canada dream of visiting during our long, cold winter. The closest scenes to those of where you live that I have seen "for real" were in Belize or Puerto Rico, but as others have noted, it's amazing how similar architecture is in all subtropical places. Of course, I guess the same could be said about buildings in more northerly (or southerly) climes as well!
I remember first visiting the tropics and being stunned by the intensity if the flower colours there. I had never before seen trees like the Jacaranda or Flamboyant tree with such "Knock-your-eyes-out" colours. Our maples have tiny, green flowers, hardly noticeable! And our fruit trees, like apples, pears, etc. are relatively small, unlike your tropical fruits such as papayas. I remember asking fruit sellers in Belize why the giant papayas they were selling didn't break the branches on which they grew. They all looked at me as if I had come from Mars! Later I saw a papaya tree in a backyard with fruit on it, and the light dawned on me: they don't grow on branches!! I sure felt embarrassed!
I also have never been able to forget the wonderful bougainvillea vines covering walls, etc.
I'm looking forward to seeing your garden develop and become the truly wonderful place you hope for!
Once again, welcome aboard!

Hi, again Nondin,
Oh, yes, I'm much more enlightened about tropical fruit now! Unfortunately, it's hard to get some of them here, although one of the local stores regularly stocks Durian and some of the others, and the giant papayas that I first saw in Belize are now for sale here but at a very high price. I did buy one, though, one day, and it was NEARLY as good as the ones I had in the south! I still haven't had the courage to try Durian, though!
Cheers,
gordonf |
