mcgTV - Garden Video Killed the Radio Star17 Sep '04 8:48 pm
There's a sneaky bit of mcgTV footage up : mcgTV - The Hampton Court Winalot Dog Friendly Garden
I've heeded swallowstiches dialup pleas and have got the size as low as I can. 15 seconds of video will weigh in at about 1mb. I've experimented with a lot of internet video technologies recently and have settled on flash Video files (.FLV).
You'll need Macromedia's Flash Player 7 installed to be able to watch mcgTV. While I'm sorry about this limitation it does allow me to keep the sizes to a minimum.
mcgTV uses a progressive video file format to enable you to view the footage as you download it.
The player is only 6k and the video will start buffering after the page has been displayed, and playing after you've downloaded 5 seconds of video footage.
I've tried to keep mcgTV as simple & unobtrusive as possible - The player is minimal and tries to mimick the way we display images throughout the site. The little mcgTV logo currently links to the front page of this site but will eventually link to an mcgTV section with an introduction, instructions/help & program listings. |

WooHoo Eggy or should I say Woof Woof
I've seen your mini video, didn't take tooo long on my dial up, when you have more footage I'll make sure I choose the right time of the day to download the longer stuff(that'll mean being up with the sparrows before anyone else hogs the Netwaves or whatever you call them).
It is almost spooky going from a still photo to people actually walking about. Didn't have my sound on so don't know whether it's audio/visual as well. Did you take it with your Fuji Digi Cam?
This is good stuff, will be looking forward to the next installment. This surely is a fun site to be a part of. |

The current footage we have, 30+ clips of our visits to Gardens and Gardening Events is all from my fuijifilm. There's no zoom and the color reproduction isn't as good as I'd have liked. Its a good start for mcgTV though and a good test of the technology involved.
We also have about 90 minutes of high quality miniDV footage taken with a - JVC D750X I think the model was. Unfortunately the camcorder we currently use is borrowed off a friend and it doesn't dump straight to disk via firewire etc.
There is a sound channel - mostly all background garden hubbub which I leave on. The little snippets of flower show conversations we catch add authenticity to the clips.
I've just bought a video capture card rather than sending the tapes away and I should have the miniDV footage clipped and compressed within a few weeks.
I've just signed a new contract at my 9-5 work so Bex gets a new laptop to replace her aging desktop PC and I get a video Capture card to play with. We work some long hours on the site and need the right tools for the job |

A technical question for you... will a DV file download and view the same as a video file or is there something required on the computer to access this particular format?
It looks like you are getting very organized at your end to supply us with some really great footage, I just hope it will be accessible to everyone here at mooseyscountrygarden.
Thanks for keeping us informed with your progress. |

Pumpkin,
what browser do you use and do you have the flash 7 plugin installed?
I can save the files in different formats - quicktime or wmv formats if this will help. let me know what you prefer.
Bx and I have just had a lovely weekend in autmunal Essex. We popped into Beth Chatto's garden and took a few photos had a cup of tea and bought a load of plants - I'll post some of the autumn and water garden photos shortly. |

mcgTV has stalled a little but is hopefully going to launch in time for Christmas. Pumpkin - I've checked in netscape 7.0 with Flash Player 7.0 installed and it works fine my test pcs...
before you install the plugin on netscape you see a white box instead of video. You could try reinstalling flash.
In lieu of your problems I'm going to include the videos in downloadable formats as well - wmv files for windows media and quicktime format as well:) That way no one will miss out...
I found that miniDV footage shot on a borrowed camcorder wasn't as good as my fujifilm s7000 and the video quality of Bex's new digital gardening camera - (I had to capture the video via a capture card) Eventually we will buy a camcorder that will dump files straight to my computer - But until then our cameras will do.
They don't zoom in and out while filming video so expect a lot of panning around |
