The Garden in September..23 Sep '06 4:47 am
September is such a strange month for the Northern Europe! It can be cold, wet, and windy with no more than 8-10 Celsius, and can be ...Mediterranean-like, exactly like the last 10-11 days! Meaning, Spring-like or Summer-like warm, and with that very special magical light, especially early in the sunny morning : sparkling, golden, translucent!
Some days of September ago, I got these pictures of our back garden, about 7.30am, in a sunny, warm morning...

A little clueless about the seasons!25 Sep '06 3:25 am
My dear Liza, am I wrong to think that autumn is drawing near over there because I'm seeing traces of autumn colours on your trees? Sorry, if I seem 'stupid' but I'm amazed at the magnificent display of colourful blooms and greenery that are seen in your immaculate garden during this time of the year. I'd appreciate if you can enlighten me a little further about the effects of the changing seasons on plants. Thanks.

The loss to come25 Sep '06 5:27 am
Dearest Liza, It's true that the end of our growing season draws to a close. Much faster here in the great white north country. We have already had frost on a few nights. Plants are going down all over.
This natural progression of time will march through your lovely garden. How do you deal with the loss? I find my heart akes for the plants that have brought me so much joy over the summer. It must be worse for you as your garden is so totally beautiful.
It still looks real nice and seems to have recovered from the scorching heat.

The golden light of .."September Morn.."25 Sep '06 5:27 am
Well, Jacqueline!! Since we first started exchanging messages in this site -- many months ago, I was amazed by the way "you really see things", meaning, you are cabable of seeing or feeling a lot of details, important details..
That early morning, about a week ago, Nicholas had just left to school ---7am. And I was not ...in the best of my human moods... And then I started, indifferently at the beginning, watching the garden from the bathroom window upstairs. And I noticed THIS light! The light , that turned everything into golden, and the already golden, even more so!! And not only that : the plants were sparkling with a morning "golden" dew, and the whole of the landscape was covered by a...."golden", translucent mist! Instantly , my mood turned into a huge amazement , I was filled by a deep gratitude!...
But in the pictures I sent, you perceive the magic of the morning golden light as Autumnal colours! No! All the trees that you see in the photos STILL have different shades of green : the trees in the fond of the garden, the pine tree on the right, the willow tree on the left, all the trees of our neighbours. It is THIS light that transformed them into golden! But almost all these trees very soon will start becoming red, orange, golden yellow, untill, progressively, they loose all their leaves... And, little by little, all the plants will need to be prepared to hibernate safely, which means a lot of pruning, cutting back, etc. Because they will acquire a rather sad, "brown" look..
Anyway. That morning, an old song came to my mind instantly, sang by one of the loveliest , deep, velvety voices! That one of the adorable Neil Diamond : " September Morn...!!".

Dear Christopher, ...25 Sep '06 5:52 am
... It was once --not long ago, my husband saw me writing to you , just like now. He saw that you are from Canada, and we discussed with love about you, your garden, your lovely families, human and animal families!
Then , I started thinking about your lovely garden , beloved plants, that very soon will start hibernating... And that you would probably feel like me when my garden starts hibernating : sad!
So, now you know how I feel around the end of November : sad! I miss my colourful babies! All the pot plants enter the heated glasshouse, pruned appropriately, in order to hibernate themselves, as well...
But...before that...Before that, a huge garden work awaits me, that hasn't started yet : weeding/ home-made compost covering of all the borders/ cutting back-tidying the Roses/ cutting back certain perrenials, like Salvias, Correopsis, Delphiniums, Rudbeckias,Asters,Daylilies, etc/ trimming certain trees/ protecting sensitive plants-pots preventively/ planting some new bulbs....Well. I think the Autumnal work is even more essential for our gardens : because prepares our plants to become healthy and happy during the whole season.

Hehe, my dear Liza! You wanna know why?...though I think you already know the answer! It’s because...photos of anything related to gardens, flowers, plants, etc. posted in this forum and elsewhere in other websites always trigger so much joy, pleasure and fascination from within my heart, almost indescribable delight! To be able to enjoy all this with just a mouse-click and ‘drink in’ every detail, all the beauty and wonder therein is pure bliss and beyond description!
Thanks so much for this bubbly explanation of your golden September morn in response to my enquiry and thanks too in contributing to my joy with all your wonderful posts and lovely garden images. As a very small token of gratitude, enjoy and be gladdened by this exquisite and unique brown hibiscus (one of my Flickr blog’s favourite) especially when your trees sadden you with their 'brown' look!
