16 Oct '05 10:22 pm Someone told me yesterday to boil up garlic and use that as a spray, as well as companion plant with them. I think it is probably worth a try...
cheers

Garlic protection for Roses.
18 Oct '05 12:33 am Hi, Susan!
Why don't you discuss your "garlic" idea for Roses in the specific topic, that already exists in the Roses section of the forum (:companion planting for Roses) ?? You could exchange many specific and useful ideas there!!
Love, Liza.

Nina weibull update
11 Jun '06 10:20 am a year later and i thought I'd give ye all an update on the roses. i ended up getting two flushes of flowers from the stronger rose, just one single flower from the weaker of the two. lucleky we escaped the worst of the aphids, we have a lot of ladybirds in the garden and they are reputed to be great for eating the aphids. (the ladybirds seem to be attracted to a few heathers that are in the garden).
last November i dug up the weaker of the two and put it into a big terracotta pot, what a difference this has made to both. the rose in the ground and opened it's first flower this week and there are six buds at different stages of maturity. the weaker rose in the post has four buds and one should be open in the next week or so. i am still planting marigolds at their base but i have also peeled cloves of garlic, put a slit in them and just pushed them into the ground.
again so far i have no problems with aphids but the slugs and snails are a different story altogether... i have had to resort to slug pellets because the dalia's are being eaten to bits. if anyone has any good organic suggestions I'd love to hear them. so far i have tried the saucers of beer, coke and putting down egg shells. i am reluctant to mulch, i tried that last year and ended up with plants rotting from the roots.
looking forward to any suggestions

Nina Weibull Roses!
13 Jun '06 1:05 am Dear Nia,
I was so happy to hear the news of your Roses after a whole year! You see, sometimes we have the best insight of all suggestions given, for the happiness of our own plants! Will you post for us some photos of your happily blooming Ninas?
Concerning the slugs, I think I can't suggest anything better than the methods you already tried! But I'm sure, there are many friends here in our Forum with golden ideas!

Slugs- ugh Snail - ugh
14 Jun '06 8:16 pm Try using the beer method in a slightly different way.
What I do is bury old cat or dog food tins right up to the top, pour the old beer from dregs in the bottles or cans
(Cant use new beer too precious especially to us Kiwis)into the cans, only an inch or so and leave. They must smell it and just can't resist. In the next day or so check your tins and you will see the poor little slugs/snails stuck in the cans.Im sure they died drunk and happy. Remove and start again. This has worked for me but I also go out at night every now and then just to see how many are winding their way across the driveway towards my gardens. It is always a surprise.I dont know where they all come from but you guessed it I no longer take any pity..Squish
There are too many.
Hope this helps
