Rhododendron "Humboldt" !!12 May '06 7:51 am
I found the ID of the tall Rhodo, because of the information Nancy gave me, concerning the word "indumentum" (:the soft hairy touch of the Yakushimanum leaves) in the previous post! My short Rhodo has softly hairy leaves when they are newly grown. Thank you, again, dear Nacy!!
Searching in Google/Images for this indumentum/image, I discovered this
fantastic (!!) Dutch Rhododendron site -- www.rhodoland.nl/general_information.en.htm !! And after being sure about the whole thing concerning indumentum, I started searching in the rich Pink Rhododendron Section of the site, always together with Google/Images. And , suddenly, here he is!! With complete colour, height, and time of blooming information. To be sure , I turned to Google, too. So, the tall Rhodo's comlete title (plus the previous information aquired) is : Rhododendron Hybrid Catawbiense Grandiflorum "Humboldt"!! My, my!!
But why now do I not feel as excited as I expected?? Hm... Because, maybe, in my heart , either he is my "Pink Exumberance " or the strange, formal "Humboldt", he is always my old, pink tall Rhododendron...Oh dear, it's such an abyss the human mind and soul.. |

Pink Rhododendrons13 May '06 9:56 am
I have an un-named pink rhododendron, Liza, which I sometimes rudely call 'the best pink rhododendron in the world' - or, when that's too much a mouthful, my 'big pink'. Not quite as evocative a name as yours - Pink Exhuberance! Lovely! |

Rhododendron beauties13 May '06 9:25 pm
Well, Moosey, I objectively believe, that both of my old pink Rhodos are the least beautiful -- comparatively -- of all those I've seen so far, either in some stunning exhibitions here in Belgium -- where everybody is crazy about them, or in your garden, or in various photos of Google and books... But I have another Rhodo, a Catawbiense hybrid which blooms late in Spring, called " Gomer Waterer", which is more beautiful, compact, having dark green medium leaves, and beautiful, light-pink ,almost white, flowers with yellow blotch. This one is the youngest Rhodo in my garden, and it is not taller than 60-80cm for the moment ; it is going to reach the 2 meters of height in the years to come.
But I simply call this lovely guy, " Pink, the Beautiful"... |
