Gunnera Envy16 May '08 1:20 pm
I am very jealous of Mooseys Gunnera seedlings... we have a large Gunnera-less pond/lake and have tried several times to grow it. It is hard to find due to the no selling/promoting rule, so we have tried various types of cuttings, a whole fruiting stalk, seeds - whatever bits are freely given by the owners of big plants.
Our local nursery even gave us some of theirs ( a large happy Gunnera growing in their equally large water feature). They couldn't sell us it but gave us some basal cuttings on the quiet! We've tried planting bits in the water, bits in the soil, some in pots, sprinkling seeds here, there, and everywhere - nothing has worked! We remain Gunnera-less and are suffering from extreme Gunnera envy!
Anyone have any ideas on how to become Gunnera owners? |

Hmm... I'm not allowed to propagate, or to gift to others... I'm aware that these seedlings which float into my garden could become a real nuisance. Oddly there are very few in the properties down-stream. They obviously take one look at my garden and decide to stay put.
I first spread them round my own garden by slicing off thin pieces with a youngish shoot and fleshy roots - using the sharp kitchen knife. But then all these cute little seedlings appeared.
I know where they're coming from here, but the 'owner' of this part of the water race denies all responsibility, in a friendly sort of way!
If you're ever down here, please come and visit in person - with a sharp knife and a plastic bag in your pocket! I'll wander off for - say - ten minutes, to leave you some privacy!

Thanks for the invite Moosey. We may well take you up on it one day. Yes indeed - I'd love a few quiet minutes with a knife and your gunnera... |

We are soon to be gunnera owners! A friend of a friend of someone my Mum knows, has kindly donated 12 little growing bits of gunnera for our pond. That's 12 little gunneras of our own! I'm not sure what to do with 12 of them - it never rains but it pours! But I am not complaining. You would hope that I could manage to keep at least 1 or 2 alive... So with a bit of luck, I won't have to take Moosey up on her kind offer. |
