Speechless
4 Nov '07 5:38 pm I'm quite amazed. The only native browsers are Moas that live in garden sheds. Loved that one, Dixie!
And even the Moose is not only exotic, but from the UK. Where? Scotland, judging by some recent articles...
But now my argument is this:
1 NZ is considered of the best sheep country in the world with a very high sheep population
2 Sheep are grazers
3 Therefore the topography and ecology of NZ favours grazers
A classic case of a logical argument. Now you tell me there are no native grazers. It seems like an extreme oversight on the part of the Dear Lord, something to which He does not tend.
Explanations are still outstanding.

4 Nov '07 10:03 pm Sorry Moosey, I entirely forgot about the native bats, there is a long tailed and short tailed bat.
Sniggers about the Moa. The native parrots you are thinking about are the kakapo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kakapo there is more info about them in the article at the end of that link.
The other link I found that refers to your question about what takes their place is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_animals which basically says that the kiwi, kakapo and Moa developed and filled those niches.. along with insects.
Hope everyone is having a great day

What sort of Moa do you use Dixie?
5 Nov '07 4:09 am I actually have a reel Moa and it cuts the grass as well as any I've used.

native Moas
5 Nov '07 5:02 am Some people have tame Moas that they can actually ride on.
Our Moa is a fairly old hairy one and needs a good push-along.

Hedgehogs to Moas
5 Nov '07 5:11 am And to think this all started out with a few innocent pictures of an extremely cute hedgehog. Since we don't have hedgehogs here, I am enthralled with them. But then I'm easily enthralled with animals in general.

Preferences
5 Nov '07 9:45 pm Me I prefer Moas.
I've yet to come across an animal you can fix with a spanner or lock in the shed for the winter.

The biggest Moa of them all...
5 Nov '07 9:57 pm I read was called Dinornis...
Now I'm really confused. Because on our playing fields they use ginormis moas to cut all that grass as quickly as possible...

Confusion reigns
6 Nov '07 6:15 am This is a weird thread indeed! I must confess that I had never really given this topic much thought, I suppose I just assumed that the NZ animals were similar to the Oz ones (sorry about that! ) But as someone once told me, to assume is to make an * of U and ME (yes, an old cliche but one I find that rings true almost every time!).
I'd love one day to have a few woolly moas - they're much nicer to look at, they're nore natural and the noises they make are far more gentle on the ears! Although some restrictions would obviously have to apply, otherwise they'd chomp lots of things they weren't supposed to.
