8 Jan '05 6:23 pm Just wondering - is there anyone out there who knows anyone who actually collects David Austin roses and grows them all? I would love to know... this would be one of the extreme rose obsessions.

11 Jan '05 7:51 am Hi there Moosey and happy new Year
I don't deliberately collect D.A s but seem to have got quite a few over the years-what's your favourite.
16 Jan '05 3:24 pm His display rose gardens should be really nice. Wonder if they dead-head twice a day? I think they'd be a popular choice, too - lots of people fancy English Roses...
I don't really know what my favourite David Austin rose is - I think the most amazing coloured one is Charles Austin. Maybe I can nominate two different favourites - probably Othello for perfume and Golden Celebration for non-perfumed.
But these three are quite old introductions. There are lots of recently introduced David Austins that I know I don't have, and apparently they are now really really well known - oops - like one called Josephine? Not sure.
Might have to buy a modern shiny catalogue to read and drool over!

21 Sep '05 5:25 pm I left quite a few DAs behind when I moved last Xmas.... Claire, Mary Rose, Heritage, Leander, Lucetta and The Prince, to name a few.
The garden I 'inherited' was fairly scrappy and belonged to a lass who knew absolutely NOTHING about roses. For instance, she pruned to inside buds so everything was all congested in the middle. I've opened them all out and sprayed and pruned and fed so we'll see. On the plus side she had a beautifull Leander.
I've since aquired Cymbeline, and have cuttings of Mary Rose, Moonbeam, Lucetta and Chaucer. A friend is taking cuttings of the Reeve for me too.
I'm a sucker for all his pink roses so it's hard to pick a favourite... maybe Mary Rose... but I love Redoute and Lucetta and Claire...and I shall HAVE to get an Othello...and Winchester Cathedral... and another The Prince.
Gardening up here is quite a challenge. The area has been in drought for 7 years, there is almost no topsoil as this is all ex-gold mining country, and the only thing there is an abundance of is rocks.
cheers

30 Sep '05 8:51 am I grow them, but they don't do well for me. I see all these photos of D.A.'s flowering their little canes out, elbowing each other for room to bloom, and read about how easy they are to grow. I have them in different locations in the garden, and they all do spectacularly mediocre in any given spot. But since they persevere, I persevere. Advice and hints welcome.

16 Oct '05 10:14 pm Dear Kathleen,
Where are you situated? Do other gardeners in your area seem to do well with roses?
The other thought is...which DAs have you tried? some are definitely better than others.
cheers
Susan
