Tears for Leander26 Jul '06 8:40 pm
May I have a weep on the collective shoulders of our friends on Mooseys forum ....Our citrus fruit next to our boundary fence have been terribly damaged with the weed poison spread by our neighbour`s tractor spray unit .I stayed inside with windows and doors closed as the spray visibly whirled in all directions 4 weeks ago. It had a strong, pungent odour ... I was affected for 2 days with sore throat ,stinging eyes and headaches ..Today I have been pruning my roses and found my beautiful Leander ,the rose nearest the boundary blackened . She has some tiny buds on the branches that are still alive .
I have noticed that so many of our forum friends care deeply for our plants and animals and birds ,so I know you will share my distress at those who spray poison so thoughtlessly .

HOW TERRIBLE!27 Jul '06 7:54 am
Dixie, I am so sorry about your citrus and your roses. What a thoughtless, rude, unneighborly thing to do.
Have you considered checking to see if he could legally do that kind of spraying? Maybe as Christopher said, there are some legal ramification. But in the mean time, here's my shoulder, cry away...I will join you. Fingers are crossed that all is not lost and the Leander will survive.
(an odd unrelated note...I have a granddaughter named LeAndra. Not exactly, but close.) To me she is as lovely as a rose.

Maybe all is not lost! Perhaps they will come back with a little TLC (Tender Loving Care)
If not, what a great excuse to get MORE PLANTS! :)And since your neighbor is to blame, HE can buy them for you!

Quite apart from the catastrophe in the garden, one has to wonder what the health ramifications are for you? You don't say what kind of terms you are on with this person, but he obviously thinks / cares naught for you and yours. Perhaps a word to the Shire Council [ or whatever the equivalent is] ?
I found myself wishing we were not on opposite sides of the Tasman, as I have still got a couple of last year's Leander cuttings coming along nicely in pots.

It makes me sooooo mad! It's not the rose, either, but you lovely, good gardening people! By the time you get any official complaint going the wind will doubtless have changed a million times! I'm sorry about that lovely rose, I think I have - her? somewhere. Will give her a sympathetic prune, for you!

Thank you for sympathy30 Jul '06 5:36 am
It was a surprise to me that such spraying is illegal in North America ...You will probably be aghast to know that some livestock farmers and crop growers in NZ spray chemicals with helicopters ,so that hapless neighbours can only watch helplessly as the spray drifts ,doing goodness knows what long - term harm. When it occurred at our other farm ,I drove till I found the helicopter landing and loading pad ,and I protested .The pilot said he was only doing a job ,and the owner of the land had gone away somewhere ! I contacted a group of concerned people ,who have tried to stop indiscriminate spraying ,without success ,as it is very hard to get a prosecution.
My neighbours here are very nice people ,which made it awkward to be confrontational .However ,yesterday Smiley approached them and told them of the damage. They were genuinely surprised at our distress ,and have agreed to let us know in advance next time ,so that we can cover our plants with tarpaulins ,and I can go and stay with my family for a few days.
Leander does have some canes that look OK - She was a big healthy rose of 5 years old -so after removing the damaged black (like burnt)canes I am anxious to see if she has been affected - such as deformed flowers .It`s a wait and see -In the meantime Hugz have been much appreciated.

Helicopter spraying30 Jul '06 8:27 am
Concerned group against chemical spraying advised me to take photos .Here is our former farm in Autumn ,taken from our house ,with our cattle .The helicopter is in the centre of the photo, and is spraying our neighbours farm - the green area which is maize ,for bugs .Maize Bugs might be killed ,but so are bees ,butterflies and our other tiny insects ....
