Is it that a garden creates a beautiful frame for a home ?

Oh, yes, I do believe so!
And I also think, that a garden might work as the perfect frame for a...soul, or a soul is expressed by a garden...And sometimes some souls are ...supported by a garden, and are saved: here in Belgium two exceptional young women, social workers, have recently been awarded by the State, because they created a special meeting and recreation place for the deprived of love or money -- or both : A Cafee, surrounded by a magnificent garden, created by those who suffer ! Deprived people of all ages, even little orphans... This is a garden for the soul! A beautiful frame for a soul...a home...
And the Francophones , in general, refer to " your secret garden", meaning the bottom of our souls, the secret place in us, where we meet with ouselves, and nobody knows or could possibly share with us...And this place sometimes might be a very cold,... Wintering garden, unfortunately...I wish, you always have a Springing secret garden in you!... |

Baroness Gisele de la Roche- Belgium23 Mar '06 9:04 pm
I have been reading about this lady today , in the biography of New Zealander ,Nancy Steen. The two women were close friends, united by a passion and vast knowledge of roses. The Baroness` garden in Belgium was at Kapellenbos , near Antwerp .Both women passionately believed that the pleasure of plants ,particularly roses ,could provide a common bond to unite people of all countries.
Gisele worked on the project of reprinting 'Les Roses' - the original paintings of PJ Redoute and CL Ant .(1817 - 1824)
Yes , I think gardens do express a person`s soul.
I was taken by surprise , but quietly smiled when a visitor commented to me " Your garden looks like you ."

Gisele.....24 Mar '06 6:45 am
I love this story! And if you ever visit me here, I'll take you there! It is no more than 30-40 minutes...It's a deal!
Nancy's Steen Garden is introduced to me/us by Moosey in a very beautiful way! I really don't remember where exactly in the site I red this description. It was just Moosey visiting like a reporter this Garden ,introducing it to us. And very beautiful photos included.
And this lovely "Gisele" name, reminds me of white scented roses , white, fluffy, female kittens, my white daisies, baby-girls' faces...Oh, well... |

Nancy Steen25 Mar '06 6:25 am
Liza - - Thank you for directing me to the fascinating corner of Moosey roses - I have visited previously , but wandered off in all directions ,as there is so much of interest .I really like Moosey`s philosophy of rose growing .I have visited many gardens in the North Island ,where I live ,but dairy farming for 35 years meant we could never venture far from our animals .
The story of Nancy Steen is that of a wonderful woman ,and her husband a knowledgable partner. Early settlers to NZ (1860 s)would bring roses and other plants from their homeland England .As their old weatherboard homes would be abandoned ,old roses ,fruit trees etc would continue to show evidence of former settlement.Nancy and her husband would collect, and identify samples and grow them for we future generations. She writes that in the Bay of Islands, wherever there are old settlements , 'Felicite et Perpetue 'can be found -generally covering a large area. She writes with an artists eye for gorgeous detail. NZ ers -do read the wonderful book 'The charm of Nancy Steen' a passionate NZ gardener -by Susan McAffer.

Really precious information! Thank you so much, Dixie!
And I deeply admire the fact of your dairy farming past!
I'll look for the book about her in Amazon. I also found this beautiful description of her garden through Google :
