Autumnal Glory in our gardens!22 Sep '05 10:06 pm
Well!
Very humbly , and always mesmerized by the wonders of Mother Nature, I decided to share with you a little bit of our garden, here in the European Autumn, which in Belgium happens to be very sunny and warm these last days.
What about YOU, sharing with us all the colourful autumnal beauty of your garden and plants??
With gardener friendship,
Liza.

The purple Asters.23 Sep '05 7:30 pm
Hi, Bex!
So happy you like them! Well, the purple ones (you don't mean the pinkish-red Chrysanthemum, right?) are the very tall "Novae Anglia".
Love, Liza

Chrysanthemums Love Story!8 Feb '06 8:08 am
Hello, and welcome , dear gardener friend! Thank you for your enthusiastic words so much! It feels so great to know that your plants make other people happy like yourself! And sharing this sort of happiness, for me it is the best present ever in my gardening world...But if you spent some more time in this lovely website, you will discover, that many-many other gardeners in the site will make you feel equally enthusiastic because of their happy, lovely plants!
Now. Crysanthemums!! Yes! Simply adorable! Meaning "Golden Flowers" in Greek -- although not all of them being golden... They are absolutely easy plants to grow, especially the outdoor varieties of my photos. And , of course, like all living creatures , they have their own...personality, which we have to respect, if we want them happy like in the photos:
1--First of all, they need your enthusiasm and love --which they have already!
2- They need very-very good draining conditions! For this, it would be great to add at the bottom of their planting hole 10-15 cm tiny terracota balls.
3-SITE and SOIL : Pick a spot , which receives at least a few hours of sunshine on a bright day. Never plant under trees. Buy for your plants special soil for potted geraniums and mix it at the planting time with humus or good organic matter (: compost, etc).
4--WATERING and FEEDING : Water well during dry, hot spells, but never keep the ground constantly soaked. In fact, the plants prefer for a while to remain a little dry, but never being constantly soaked. Feed them every 15 days with liquid fertilizers for Surfinias or Petunias. They do prefer slightly acid conditions.
Now. The plants in the pictures are plants firstly bought at the nursery, perfectly grown up in size, during early Autumn as pot plants . Soon as I bought them, I planted them directly in my garden, where I wished them to remain as perennials. The hole I prepare for them is aways VERY comfortable, because I never forget that they are going to aquire many new shoots at the bottom and many new roots as well. Soon after the blooms fade, I NEVER CUT THEM BACK, because their round umbrellas will serve as protection for the winter frosts! Even more, I protect them with some dry leaves of my garden, directly on surface level, if the winter is severe , of course.
CREATING NEW PLANTS : I personally divide my Chrysanthemums every 2 years in early Spring. But, if you want, you can use the new rooted shoots at the base to create new baby plants , which you will firstly plant in medium sized pots. In the following Autumn , you will plant them directly in your garden. Many of my neighbours have adopted some of my Chrysanthemums in Spring, because there is not always space for all those new babies...
STOPPING : This is pinching out the soft tips, in order to create more new shoots, even more flowers in Autumn. You can do this during the first week of June.
The dark pink Crysanthemum in the photo starts blooming by the beginning of September, while the other varieties , the golden and cream ones, start by the end of September and flower during October.
I hope I gave you all the information you need , my good new friend, concerning Chrysanthemums. Regarding all plants in general, they need Love , and Respect for living beings and not for decorative things; also, they need being planted according to their environmental , personal needs, and not our own... They all need good draining conditions and fresh , good quality soil enriched with good organic matter.
Good luck, and remain positive and happy!
