Thanks, Jack Minus One11 Nov '07 12:00 pm
I was absolutely - gobsmacked? by the vista-view through, across the bay, to that distant hill. All the other ladies were scoffing afternoon teas or wandering around the castle itself. We don't have all that much history in NZ, so people tend to overcompensate. We can barely do Victorian.
Thanks so much, Jack - of course, we artistic creative folk have the knack of 'seeing' beyond... Or maybe you're just trying to be nice to me cos NZ has crashed against SA in the cricket!
Love the title. And please visit NZ! Cheers

Hee hee, good one Jack
That view certainly is rather spectacular - who'd have expected to see a mountain through those trees? However, and please don't hate me for this, but I must confess that those lawns are a little too immaculate and manicured for my tastes! Too many straight lines, although having said that, I like the sculpture the other side of the pond

GORSGEOUS!!12 Nov '07 1:34 am
All the photos of this page are captivating, Jack!! But the Vista one is just STUNNING!! GORGEOUS!! Mary is a specialist on this sort of captures ( in all the captures, actually..) . I remember the very special way she captured the Chateau de La Hulpe beauty, when we had visited that graceland together..She has a VERY artistic eye, and an excellent camera, which she takes care of and protects a lot!! And I really respect a lot that!

Beautiful gardens .. great photos!12 Nov '07 5:26 am
You weren't kidding Jack. Those are wonderful garden scenes. I liked the Vista garden scene but I also liked the more 'natural' rock garden views in the other garden. It looks as though our Moosey has been inspired. I'm eager to see what her NGP comes up with to address the rainfall and drying winds issue. (I'd be especially interested in ways to increase the rainfall.) Must be tough being a NGP to a GP with Moosey's aspirations.

Vista views14 Nov '07 1:20 am
Dear Jack, thanks for pointing the way to Mary's post about her tour of rhododendron and azalia gardens. The views of Larnach Castle Gardens were indeed spectacular. I have yet to figure out how you found it. I think I need to be poking about more on the home page.

Lanarch Castle14 Nov '07 6:28 am
May I chime in with some photos of Lanarch castle. My daughter lives on the distant hill through the gorgeous Vista-(that might be her pushing her bicycle up the hill.)
It is one of those Magic places I will never forget, though the gardens were not as developed as they are now. With my grandparents coming to NZ from Scotland and sailing into this harbour, there is pride in the Scottishness of the area, and the appreciation of well-crafted construction.

Faith, you are right. It is very easy to miss out on Moosey's various articles. I try to regularly check 'recent news', under NEWS, 2nd column top left of the home page. That is how I found it. (I think... )
What an amazing place, Dixie! But this is another daughter, not the one of whose house you have posted pics, surely... I picture her with my very sketchy NZ geography as being much further north.

I have three daughters,Jack. The oldest is on a farm on the flat Hauraki plains, between Auckland and Thames. The second has the home in Dunedin,on the opposite side of the harbour from Lanarch castle. The youngest is high on a hill overlooking Wellington harbour.Interestingly, all three love native plants in their gardens.
I also have a son near the sea in Auckland.(Kohimarama)With the warmer climate,he has a very tropical garden, and I will take photos when I next visit.
