I have two philadelphus-a single one and a double one-they are beautiful.I don't think you would need more than a couple of plants as they send up new shoots each year and multiply very rapidly.Liza will probably have some good advice.
I am delighted to see you again Sjoerd,I always enjoy your humour and pictures of your stunning garden-I have a Westerland rose now,I remember your pics of it and always thought it was so lovely.

Welcome back, Sjoerd!26 Nov '07 9:29 pm
Don't disappear again!
There is a very lovely one, with smaller, more star-shaped flowers, HOWEVER beware: it has almost no scent!
"Belle Etoile" has a purple blush to the base of the petal - I prefer the pure white, although I must admit I've never found this one to grow it myself - and I would if I could.
In trying to find the 'Basic' one I have plenty of, I found the following link. Good luck searching!

Welcome back Sjoerd!!!26 Nov '07 10:07 pm
Lovely to see you back!!! Well, my two Philadelfus have big double flowers and become about 2,5 meters tall. They are called in French "Bools d'Argent". They are very scented and healthy, but I think those with smaller and single blooms have a stronger smell!

Hello Liza, Jack and Dixie...
'tis great to speak to you folks again. Thanks for responding to my query.
It is a daunting task searching for these mock-oranges (we call them boerenjasmine). There asre so many aren't there?
I shall use three between my neighbour and my garden as a "sort-of" hedge---but not too solid, because I don't want him to get the wrong idea, if you know what I mean.
I need to have some height here and there, as the plots arounf me are all flat and used for veg production. The wind just sweeps across the terrein as if it were a savanna and sometimes "burns" things like my rose plant during the winter. Burrrr....I get cold just thinking about it. heh heh
We have had it extreemly busy here and taken on a second allotment, strictly for production. That plot had been totally neglected and required(s) an enormous amount of attention. It was(and still is) completed infested with couch grass, ground elder, Horse's Tail (Equisetum arvense),and bindweed.
The struggle is ongoing--although I am using a particular type of Tagetes top combat most of these weeds. I shall know next season if it works. I know already that ti kills couch grass.
Dixie: Thanks for the nice words. I am thrilled that you have a Westerland rose. I can only hope that you are as pleased with it as I am. It just gets better each year. I appreciate your advice on mock oranges. What varieties are they?
Jack: Sorry for the longe absence, but I have had it so enormously busy here that I have barely had time to keep my website up. There just hasn't been much time for extra things this past year. I am going to try and spend more time here this winter, but I just can't tell how it's going to go at the moment. Thank you for the mock orange tips. That website is indeed very helpful. It is a good place to use for copmparisons, isn't it?
Liza: It's good to see you again. Although I haven't been active here for some tiome, I have checked back from time to time to look at piccies and read bits and pieces here and there... so I haven't been totally out of touch. Thanks for the tip on the sort of mock orange that you have. sniff-sniff.... I can almost smell it from your description. Grin

Having a Philadelphus as a sort of 'hedge' is a charming idea.Don't leave us in suspense,Sjoerd-let us know what you decide.
Today I visited a friend's country garden-it is absolutely gorgeous, with big sweeping lawns.I took lots of photos which I will show another time. However here is the wonderful view from her home, with'Westerland growing along the fence.

Magnificant view, Dixie. --An expanse that I can only dream of here...hahahaha.
Ok, I shall let you know how it turns out. I have only just begun to search and think.
It may well be a while before decisions are made...and, realistically, it will also
depend upon if the garden centers here actually will have the plants that I finally choose.
Heh heh heh. We'll see though. I promise to post once something is certain.
