Rhododendron14 Aug '07 2:51 am
Can anyone tell what type of Rhododendron this is.Its a very nice shade of yellow, not wishy washy like some. The plant was found amongst some other shrubs and had gone all leggy. Is it possible to try and cut it back to encourage it to grow again from lower down the stem.Any help would be welcome. Gary

Yellow Rhododendrons.17 Aug '07 1:41 am
Dear Gary,
All yellow Rhododendrons are R.Wardii-hybrids .They are shrubs of 1,20-2m, blooming in early June(Europe). There are three varieties of these Rhodos : Wardii "Bernstein"--yellow blooms, Wardii "Goldbukett"--lemony/canary yellow blooms, and Wardii "Goldkrone"--golden yellow blooms.
And yes, every 10-12 years we may prune a little harder our Rhodos, who do not normally need any pruning...Just in case they are leggy or abandoned, and need help.
Good luck, my friend!! And WELCOME!

[quote="Liza"]Dear Gary,
All yellow Rhododendrons are R.Wardii-hybrids
Well, no, as well as Wardii there are several other wild species of rhododendrons with yellow flowers, then all the yellow hybrids of which there must be dozens.

Dear friend, I have the great chance of having a specialized book by a Flemish/Belgian Writer on "Acid-soil loving plants" . He is an expert on Rhododendrons...I never write serious things here picked-up from my own mind....Well, on the other hand , your thought sounds really rational and correct.
And, we are talking about Rhododendrons here, NOT Azaleas! Because I have two gorgeous Golden Chinese Azaleas in my garden, one of which grows wild -- and becomes huge!!-- in Chateau de La Hulpe! It is the lovely, and scented (!) Azalea Luteum.

I work in Brodick Castle gardens, home to an internationally famous rhododendron collection of over 250 fully mature species, many grown from seed collected in China and the Himalaya by the great Victorian planthunters. It's visited by rhododendron enthusiasts from all over the world. The Chinese govt sends two botanists to Brodick every year, on rhododendron study secondment.Brodick's previous head gardener travels to China several times a year, to identify the species in their Botanical gardens.

What a great chance!!21 Aug '07 11:00 pm
How lucky you are , dear friend, to work in such a Paradisiac ...and Rhodondendron-filled place!! Have you, then, noticed, that Chinese Azaleas are also called "Azalea-Rhododendrons"??
And, of course, I guess, that since my book has been published (1993 : "Les Rhododendrons et Plantes de Terre de Bruyere", by Pierre Nessmann - Diplome de l'Ecole D'Horticulture de Geneve), the scientists /hybritizers, have been constantly working for the birth of new baby Rhodos/Hybrids, of all colours, all over the world!

you said
" we are talking about Rhododendrons here, NOT Azaleas!"
I am indeed, talking about species rhododendrons which DO have yellow flowers and are NOT azaleas, NOT azaleodendrons and NOT, r.wardii.

How lovely!!22 Aug '07 9:34 pm
Oh!! How lovely!! So! We are talking about EXACTLY the same Rhodo-theme!! Well, as I explained in my previous post, the scientists/hybridizers, have done amazing job , since 1993, on all RHODODENDRONS' colours, why not yellow!! And this is not strange at all, if you think, for example, how many well-known or not hybridizers all over the world work hard on Roses each year!! Look at David Austin! And I have been amazed by certain lovely Roses I have discovered here in our garden site, completely unknown in the European market : like Faith's American Roses and certain of Moosey's, neatly N.Zealand Roses!

Of course. But you claimed,"all yellow rhododendrons are r.wardii hybrids", which is untrue.
