San Francisco Botanical Garden visit, July 14, 200715 Jul '07 12:41 pm
I went to the monthly plant sale today. Nine new plants .. crikey! ("Crikey" is another expression picked up on line whose use I'm not entirely sure of, but sure do like the sound of.) At the library you can drop off old gardening magazines and buy old ones for a quarter each. I picked up 4 Fine Gardening and 4 Pacific Hort's. Then I went to a place, the only one in the country it turns out, which sells ceramic seconds. I bought my brother four large pots at $20 each, I got 2 smaller ones and they were having a promotion where each customer could take 10 wall mounting vase pots for free - hard to beat that price.
Anyhow, I remembered that some of you were interested in seeing more of the New Zealand garden so I brought my camera. At some point the New Zealand garden becomes the Australia garden, but it is hard to see exactly where so I have some photos of each. I also couldn't resist including a few from the (South Africa) Cape garden.

Clearly this is where it starts, but just to the right may be the Australian garden. Are the plants very different? I wonder how much overlap there is.

One path through the New Zealand garden opens out on this long grassy path from pavillion at this end to the center fountain in the opposite direction.

NZ Gardens in San Francisco16 Aug '07 9:07 am
What wonderful photos! Wow! Mark, thank you so much for thinking of some of us - us that love to see these NZ plants throughout the gardening world, that is!
Don't worry about New Zealand and Australia sort of blending into one another - we do it all the time! It's the classic joke that many untravelled folk think NZ is attached to Australia. Over here in the NZ bit we love, adore, and worship that nasty Tasman sea which separates us! And Australian natives are much more scruffy than NZ natives. Oops - I really do mean the plants!

Happy to oblige.16 Aug '07 12:41 pm
I'm just sorry I couldn't show it to you in person during your around the world trip. It didn't dawn on me that you would be coming so far, but I suppose that's why you call it an "around the world tour". I seem to remember reading that you were pretty tuckered out and pining for home by the time you got here, or maybe it was just fending off the panhandlers that tired you out. Now the next time you come through town please do put me to work chauffering you around. (I'm also available for local itinerary planning at no extra charge.) It would be a pleasure.

Well Liza the same offer goes for you of course.17 Aug '07 5:23 pm
If you and your family ever travel out this way again I'd be happy to drive you around and let you pick my brains about possible destinations. Of course there is tea waiting in my garden if you come as far as the east bay, or possibly a soak in the hot tub for that quintessential bay area experience. If one day you and your husband would like to stay a day or two with us of course that would really be fun. I should warn you that a hundred year-old warehouse, even somewhat remodeled, will always remain a 'sow's ear', but perhaps it will appeal to your sense of adventure.
The photo you mentioned -wide view with pond- is one of my favorites. I just love that craggy looking tree top on the right side, peeking over the top of some other tree in the fog. It reminds me of those chinese paintings of craggy branches and stone. I'd like it still better if I'd some how cropped out that ugly blacktop walkway infront.

Mark, I just chickened out of being adventurous, and spent about two hours in a fancy art gallery gazing at Chagalls and Picassos while a beautifully groomed lady twittered on to me. Oddly, it's a memory that really makes me giggle.
Now next time, I will definitely let you know, me in my ignorance didn't connect you with San Francicso at all, how silly is that? Your photographs make me giggle even more - seeing what I missed out on! What a goose! but I was a tired goose, and really homeward bound...
Cheers, til next time!

Such gorgeous captures! That last pic is such a lovely treat, like dessert with ice shavings! These pincushion blooms look huge, are they? Thanks, Mark!
