31 May '07 1:20 pm I usually only show the tidy pictures. However I will be honest and show what I have been doing this last week.
the first photo is Sally Holmes .The possums have been brutal this summer and chew off the little shoots much to my disappointment.I have started to trim the artemesia and often use the trimmed bits lying on the ground here to cover other plants in winter.I have brought the garden out and planted a pieris, some flax and other bits and pieces.
The next photo is of the archway into the farm paddock. The black mass is the jasmine -the fragrance can be smelt from the house, but it badly needed cutting back.Little goldfinches like to nest in it so I had to wait till the baby birds had all departed.
The next photo is the 'after'.On the right is the hydrangea bed -I wait till early winter to prune them .I got a load of mushroom compost and put it into sacks to use later. On the left behind the agapanthus is 'Alberic Barbier' which needs a good tidy up.The two magnolias have been pushed over as they grew by the huge blue cedar on the left. However ,at this point a bit of dead wood from the trees flicked into my eye so I am having a 'sorry for Marion' day and abandoned everything.

to the left of the previous photo-the gingko at the entrance to our home.

A country lane that invites a walk.
31 May '07 3:37 pm Now that sure is an inviting little road for a walk in the last picture, numbered 001. So weird to see your garden winding down just as mine is accelerating. I'll look forward to a sneak peek at spring again in your garden when we wind down again.

I love your gingko, they're another of my favourite trees. One of the great things about the Waikato region is how much faster they grow up here compared to the Manawatu where I grew up. My mother's gingko in Palmy was one of the only ones I remember seeing (it may be that as a child I just wasn't very observant ) but up here I'm pleased to note that, while one could hardly say they're common, they are grown much more often.
3 Jun '07 2:41 am Hi Dixie, your trees look kind of crazy wild! Don't take me wrong, as I prefer trees like that. Trees can be over-manicured in my opinion.
Your lane is an inviting place.
You know I heard about this "Motion Detecting Sprinkler" that is made to stop annoying pests entering the garden. You put it near the spot you want to protect and leave it turned on, but of course it waits in ambush for some critter to stumble into it's path and bingo! It squirts them and scares them away. I think this would solve your varmint problem.

Autumn at home
12 Jun '07 12:38 pm I have just taken this photo -it is a chilly day ,but not freezing. Neighbours working outside are still wearing shorts.
This is taken from under the gingko tree looking towards the house. We live in the top of the house.Below is a garage and rumpus-storage.The stems in the foreground are 'Albertine' rose which grows along the fence .Yellow wave flax will grow in the shade but does not show as brilliant colour as it would in full sun.

12 Jun '07 12:46 pm I moved a few steps to the right for this photo.I will cut the cannas back after the first frosts which have not come yet.I painted the entire bottom half of the house as some of it was bare concrete. It is now easy to keep clean.I also painted the rails blue, helped by my daughter,

12 Jun '07 1:45 pm The whole effect is lovely. The yellows are gorgeous in your garden, and the blue railing works beautifully against the white of the house, making the combined works a masterpiece.

15 Jun '07 2:47 am Hi Dixie! Love the chartreuse leaves in your garden 002-2 pix! Beautiful scene, like how you composed that shot with the tree trunk at extreme left and generous show of its branches and leaves framing across the pic, as well as giving a glimpse of your home! Glad you added the next picture to complete my curiosity! Anna said it all - your home is really beautiful!
