I'd love to see some pictures (and short biographies) of other gardeners' cats. Cats are such characters in the garden. Would anyone like to send in such? |

I don't have any cats, but I could send in photos of our beagle digging up everything we try to plant. Would that count? |

Bring on the beagle!
Sadly, there are no cats currently resident on my parents farm in Boxted, but there has nearly always been a cat or two around, following us around as we worked, patroling the farm boundaries, or (rarely) trying to catch mice. Mostly, they stayed inside and slept under the woodburner tho
The cats suffered annual celebrity when the hoards of pick-your-own strawberry customers arrived each summer. The cats normally had run of the place with only a few people for company, but the summer invasion completely threw their cat-sense of territory.
When a spritely kitten / ball of hair with tail, Smudge would jump out from behind raspberry canes, swatting the shoelaces of unsuspecting customers, or swipe a hand as it searched for fruit in the leaves - very naughty! Suzie's middle-aged spread was frequently mistaken for pregnancy, provoking many an embarassed moment
Both cats developed charming manners, to get the most attention from the temporary influx of adoring crowds. Often the cats would sulk off tho, annoyed at the intrusion.
I miss the cats. Perhaps I could sneak a voting poll onto my mum's website - a new cat in Boxted or not? I'm sure it would be an overwhelming YES! |

I was laughing at the bit about sneaking a poll onto your mom's website. Too funny! The cats sound like such fun -- and your description made me smile.
Besides the beagle, we have three other dogs -- all from the pound so all described as "mixes." My parter Jen keeps trying to plant things in the backyard (the dogs' domain) -- I keep telling her we ought to just let it be and plant in the side and front yards. But she persists. And then, as always, nothing comes up -- or if it does it is quickly trampled by dogs laying on it or running over it or peeing on it. In fact this weekend I think she wants to put in some more flowers. She will not be deterred!
When we moved in there were three big beautiful hosta plants, some day lilies, a bunch of summer phlox, and a couple of rose bushes in the back yard. Now only the lilies even bother to try to grow each year. It's rather depressing, but I'm a practical gal. I've begun to dream about what to try to grow in the front of the house. I've got some wildflower seeds for the side of the house, but I can't decide whether to try some plants we've already not had success with out front, or try something new.
Anyhow -- I'll still have to get some pictures of the doggies enjoying their yard (basically some dirt with a little grass). |
