Moosey, Whats your favourite plant?23 Feb '04 1:28 am
Yippee! It seems silly to be posting in my very own garden forum, but hey! Thomas, an intelligent non-gardener, visiting from Sydney, asked me what my one favourite plant at Mooseys was. A terrible question, but I knew the answer straight away - my New Zealand flaxes. I couldn't be without them! New Zealand flaxes are simply the best.... |

Hi Moosey--congratulations on the new look!!! Cannot agree about the flaxes, my favourite is good old pittosporum--they look so good as the background to all sorts of shrub accents. I use them to screen out ugly views, neighbors and also as wallpaper to show off flowering plants--perennials, roses, camellias etc. And of course they are great, fast-growing windbreaks as well |

I'm not the world's greatest gardener so my answer has to do with what we've been able to keep alive in our yard. Which means my favorite of our plants would have to be our clematis. She started out as this wee little plant but has managed to hang on for 3 years now. Really beautiful purple flowers.
OOPS. I noticed after I posted this that the forum is for NZ native plants. |

Hi to you Mopsie--that is the secret of good gardening in a nutshell, growing plants suitable to your backyard!!! I also have clay and, as a very lazy gardener, I encourage the worms to do the digging by layering newspaper and mulch. I found small plants, ie baby ones, get used to the conditions and create a better environment for you and following plants If clematis are happy there go for it!! |
