Getting ready for Holidays!!18 Dec '07 11:43 am
It is SO cold around here these last days!!! Cold (0 Celcius) and sunny during the daytime, starry and frosted , with -6 Celcius during the night!! I walk around the garden to check the plants every day...I feel sorry about this persistant frost...The ground is stony-hard frosted, the plants look like brown skeletons hunging , like in thriller films...I covered with a special protection my Camelia and my Ceanothus...I feel sorry for my suffering plants...In the green house the temperature is 10-18 Celcius, all plants have acquired new leaves...Another world in there...In the living room, my Agapanthus Africanus is preparing new blooms, and my Gardenia is full of new leaves..
And , with all these, lots of household and getting prepared for the Holidays!!! Everybody is coming home! Alexandra is coming with a Polish girlfriend of hers! Thanos has a Christmas Birthday!!! Dear me!!! Presents, cooking, washing!! Invitations....Getting dressed looking classy-- I hate this, being deprived of my everyday simplicity..That is the fate of mamas....I am not complaining...Only my physical body is getting older, and my mind needs serenity....
Anyway!! Yesterday I prepared the Christmas Tree with Nicholas!! Here are some happy captures/moments of the Christmas ambiance in the house...
PS:Thank you all my kind friends, for your lovely comments about my Clematis!!! Welcome again Sjoerd!!

Hello, again!25 Jan '08 10:02 am
I hope you are ALL happy, positive, and creative this New Year!! At the moment, I feel , too, like this...How long will it last.... Well, this is unknown...Life is SO.... wavy...
I haven't been in my garden for SO long!!! But strolling around today for a while, I discovered my three young Hamamelis in bloom!!! And all my bulbous plants in full....growing action!!! This gave me a sort of a mental and emotional...lifting!!! I ran inside to see whether the...weather will allow me tomorrow to garden!! And I discovered, that YES!! Wow!!! My borders need a good tiding up, many of my Roses need pruning, like my Clematis...And everybody needs ...good food!!!
But have a look at some photos I took today of my Hamamelis babies:

Exciting hammamelis news!27 Jan '08 3:24 am
Oh how beautiful your hammamelis are Liza. I remember last year when you visited the nursery where you found some new hammamelis babies to bring home. If they were among this group, they are very happy in their new home. It is so good to see you excited and looking forward to working in your garden again.

How exciting, Liza!27 Jan '08 7:18 pm
I can only imagine how wonderful it must be to discover these wonderfully scented, beautiful flowers blooming amid snow and winter conditions. I've admired these but haven't tried to grow them yet. You are definitely pushing me to think of it again.

Usually these plants are slow to make an impression, but with your usual magic touch you have achieved phenomenal results, Liza! I can't believe they are last year's nestlings! Winter is on the wane in Lisa's garden....

Witchhazels29 Jan '08 6:04 pm
Hi, Liza!
Your Witchhazel pictures are beautiful! They're not in bloom here yet, but it shouldn't be very long until they are! Just now, it is snowing hard outside and the temperature is -2C. I've always loved these small trees, but, alas, I haven't space for one here. They sure cheer up the chilly winter days!
Since the ground in my garden has been frozen hard for the last few days, I haven't done anything in the garden except to clean up after the dog! However, I did notice that the Hellebores all have buds on them and should be in bloom shortly after this cold spell ends.
I spoke to my contact person in the valley where I'm thinking of relocating tonight, and he said it was near -30C. up there! But I'm still very excited about my pending visit!
All the best to you!
Cheers!

Lots of older NZ town gardens always had a Witch Hazel planted near one of the doors - a bunch of sticks, then to transform into beautiful colour and fragrance. The pictures are lovely, dear Liza! I haven't got one in my garden. Yours are obviously so well cared for - lucky things!
Cheers
