Oh My Gosh! Check this....14 Apr '06 5:03 am
Remember the daylilies I bought as bare root plants and have had them soaking in a bowl of water until I could get them planted? Well..... They're STILL in that bowl, but look at this....

It defies all reason, Liza! These love direct sunlight... they have ONLY indirect light. They love well-drained soil.... they have been saoking in WATER for nearly a month! All I can say is that these babies truely have the will to live! They will be going into the garden this weekend!

Amazing Daylily!14 Apr '06 7:15 pm
It's a beauty! I can't believe it's not putting all its energies into sulking. That's what mine do when I plant them inappropriately, without enough sun.
You aren't a secret daylily-whisperer, are you, Cottage Garden? Those talents could be much in demand! You could even get your own TV programme!

Another weekend to enjoy....17 Apr '06 2:26 am
And I have been enjoying it!
Yesterday was very productive in the gardens... We got my new trellis put up and the Juneberry tree planted. Now as soon as my Chocolate Vine arrives I can get it planted on the trellis and (hopefully) it will grow and screen the view of the compost bins.
The 'men' were making fun of my Juneberry.... I bought a 12", bare root plant.... which means I got a twig with a few roots on it. LOL. They just had a BALL with that one... LOL.
I managed to get my new friends planted: 2 garden phlox, 2 white hardy asters, 12 dianthis (annual), and 2 English Ivy (annual. I hope they like thier new homes....
We borrowed a tiller.... mine is currently in the shop for reparis. Its only 2 years old! .... anyway... tilled the veggie garden again and put in 6 tomatoes, 6 red peppers, shallots, onions, spinach, mesclun and rosemary. I still have plenty of room for more!
I was delighted to see my dwarf iris blooming just in time for Easter! I transplanted these from my dad's farm last spring and they failed to bloom last year. Looks like they're adjusted to life in the city... LOL.
The d*mnedest thing happened! Last fall I dug and divided ALL the hostas on the east side of the house.... I planted ALL of them under the pines in the back yard.... Guess I didn't get all the roots, because I was out strolling yesterday morning and found HOARDS of hosta growing on the east side of the house!!!! Gotta' love free plants!
I have a long list of 'chores' for today as well.... starting with planting those d*mn daylilies! LOL. I still haven't done that because I'm still deciding where they should live! I think I've got it pretty well narrowed down.... better have! They need to go into the dirt!!!

My new trellis. How's it look? We built this for a fraction of what I'd had to pay for a reaady-made!

My Creeping phlox is doing so well this year. It really has had a hard time establishing. I planted these in 2004 and this is the first year they've really done well.

Thanks, Dixie!
We're going to leave it plain so that it patinas the same as the wood fence.
A Chocolate Vine is also known as a Five Leaf Akabea.... It is native in some areas, and even banned in many southern areas of the U.S. because it is considered dangerously invasive and can actually kill large trees by smothering them. However, this far north they are used as ornamentals. They can grow as much as 40' feet in single growing season... but I have 55' of provacy fence for it to wander along, so I'm not too terribly worried. And, They can easily be controled with pruning.
Here a photo for you....

Great progress!!17 Apr '06 9:19 pm
Hi Cottagegarden: have been away for just a week from the forum and I've missed so much - great plans, 'tons' of effort and hard work involved, yet can feel your excitement and joy as you share them with us. Love your fiery daylilies, arbor and trellis and your chocolate vine (hmmm.. its common name suits it so well and a very rare color indeed which is a first time for me!). Thanks for sharing.
Here's wishing a very Happy Easter to all friends here and your families and may the risen Christ bring more joy, peace and love into your hearts.
