Spring in the Fairy Garden8 Sep '07 6:32 am
After the cold and wet of winter,I took a stroll along the paths, covered with cedar needles, and decided what needed to be done to tidy it all.

Winter work8 Sep '07 6:55 am
During winter I gave the little houses a fresh coat of paint, and found some snails had crawled inside and were occupying them.I sent them packing.
I also painted about 200 smooth stones that I had gathered from Wellington.

Lovely ideas!8 Sep '07 8:26 pm
I love the colored rocks. A real inspiration. The mushroom looks great too and the houses are delightful. I can see I will have to get busy real soon!
Your garden is really starting to shape up. Well done!!

You got me thinking.8 Sep '07 9:04 pm
When I moved from Vancouver, on the west coast of Canada, to Saskatchewan, some 1300 miles+ inland, I made the trip in May. Deb flew out to join me and we made the trip together in my van with all my worldly possessions packed up. To save money we planned to cook our own food on the trip and so I had made my camping gear available for use. We left Vancouver about 7 pm and drove into the night. By the time we were hungry enough to stop for some food it was 3:30 am and we had just pulled in to Kamloops B.C.
Deb was alarmed when I pulled into a card lock station, that's a special type of gas station that caters to big rigs and needless to say, we were not driving a big rig. She was nervous. I calmed her down and pulled in to the big empty well lit parking lot and parked beside one of the big light polls and calmly got out and set up my camp stove and proceeded to cook up some macaroni. Got out my folding chair, put on my nice warm robe and relaxed while the water came to a boil. (Deb still has a chuckle when she recalls the scene)
I looked down and there at my feet was this rock. It didn't look like it should be there in the parking lot. It was about 6 or 7 inches across, round and smooth. I picked it up for a souvenir and brought it with us. When I got to my new home, I painted a face on the rock for fun.
We still have him, he is our pet rock. Our resident doorstop. I thought you might like to see him.

Thank you for your interest.
Christopher-what an amazing story, but perhaps not surprising, with things you have mentioned of your life.Your special rock must have a name, apart from doorstop, surely?
I am amazed because that is what I have done-picked up stones- with special trips we have taken-very few trips actually because we rarely left our dairy animals for the 30 years we lived on our little farm.
However when we were near retirement we went to visit the South island, which I had dreamed of doing my whole life.It is completely different from the North.I chose a special rock from each place we stopped. The rocks are glacial-beautiful greyish-silver.
Here is a picture of a peaceful place, and I picked a rock from here-I know which one actually, and as soon as it is daylight I will take a picture of it in the Fairy garden.I have never painted the special rocks,as they are beautiful in their own right.

Hi Dixie,9 Sep '07 12:31 pm
I've been getting on line at school during lunch and reading about the Fairy garden with interest. The little houses work really well with that fine leafed plant you put it with. The toad stools are at a much larger scale, but that makes sense because this is a fantasy. Afterall if the houses which are normally large are especially small for the fairies, why shouldn't little toadstools appear here very much larger than usual. It fits. I like the latest pictures of the rocks where we just see a few at a time. The color of the rocks could almost be flowers with the usual backdrop of leaves and folliage we'd expect with flowers. The photos of the South Island are beautiful. The color of the water is like glacier melt, that nice milky turquoise color. I really appreciated that when I clicked on those photos they enlarged to fill the screen. Nice to see so much detail. (I'd held off saying anything before because I thought, with a dial up connection, it might take you much longer to load.)
Well I have a little more catching up to do and then I'm going to load some more garden pictures myself. I've had a great Saturday. I went over to the San Francisco Botanical Garden for their monthly plant sale, drove South to pick up my favorite pizza and then went to the discount pottery place for some more steals. Right now the dogs are making me feel very guilty so first they get to take me for a walk.
Please keep taking these closeup shots of different perspectives on the Fairy Garden. I think that is the right way to view it and its fun.
