Shade rhododendrons19 Apr '05 8:09 am
Hi Steve and welcome to the forum!
As usual I'm no help in the plant department but I hope you can found something suitable.
I know that Moosey has had varying success with rhododendrons, mainly dependant on their proximity to the gum trees which sapped all the moisture. Not sure about shade tho. Perhaps now Moosey is on holiday from school she might be caoaxed back into the forum for comment...? |

Steve,
I'm not very good at global rhododendrons - trouble is that here in NZ we have local breeders, and most of the rhododendrons in my garden are New Zealand hybrids. I suspect that some of the species ones would behave well in shade - but they might be too large.
I could help you better if it was wind-tolerance you were wondering about! I personally love the big leafed hybrids, but the thought of shredded leaves has stopped me from purchasing. Anyway, hopefully someone will have some good shade ideas. Help!
Good luck, and happy gardening. |

shady rhododendrons!21 Apr '05 11:57 am
Steve,
Welcome to the forums. I'll be visiting Isabella's Plantation in Richmond (UK) in the next couple of days - I've heard the rhododendron and azaleas are about a week away from their best.
I'm not much of a green thumb but I'll put on my horticultural hat and ask one of the gardening staff what shade tolerant rhododendrons they would recommend and get back to you. |
