Moosey's variegated irises...
20 Sep '09 2:42 am Hmmm. I'd love to see a pic! I don't know of any variegated dietes, and if they exist I shall CRAVE them!
Are they perhaps dianella? Small blue star shaped flowers and large round lapis-lazuli (sp?) blue seeds. An easy filler and a very useful plant - not a SA native. Dianella come in both plain and variegated, and the leaves are wider and slightly shorter than dietes - altogether less grass-like, but not as solid as agapanthus.

Dear Sir
25 Sep '09 5:27 am Truly variegated irises do exist. Now, haven't seen Lady M.'s entry on variegated iris yet, so assume you are referring to foliage. One of my most favorite breeders (I crave his splashy splashed blooms), offers the most I've seen. Please do not get too excited yet...he doesn't ship overseas, so sorry. But you can at least see some, in full iris-regalia bloom! www.zebrairis.com
Think you will find his naming of his iris to be spiffy, too!

Random research - or lack of.
25 Sep '09 9:25 am The only reason I think they're Dietes is that I saw something very similar at a local budget nursery and that was the name on the planter bag. Then I got terribly excited - as one does, having found out the name of something one has grown for years and years. And then I did the most cursory of Google image searchs - without wearing my spectacles. OOps. So is my credibility in the world of serious horticulture partially restored?
As if it mattered... Hee hee! Cheers, will post photo for you to 'correctly' ID as something really ho-hum and boring.

red WITH variagations?
26 Sep '09 3:52 am Riobrazos, around the world so many things go by the name iris that everyone gets confused sooner or later! And around here dietes are called both Wild Iris and Daylily... how's that for confusing!
So I suggest: check that red face for variagation; if you find it, market it. You'll make your fortune! And those sure are impressive irises at Zebra Gardens!
