I was wondering how to break the subject gently. After a high-profile black businessman and civic leader published a book of Afrikaans poetry (the language of the "Apartheid oppressor"), he was described as a perfect example of a "New South African" in the press on Monday. This led to an SMS quest on the radio for a definition of a New South African. There were many many entries about non-racialism, and some rather partisan ones supporting the ruling party, and some good attempts at finding a succinct definition, but there was one two word entry that I will remember best: "Morne Steyn"
Do you know in NZ that his father named him after his childhood hero from the late 60s, one of our most charismatic Springboks ever, despite playing in the days before TV when black and white thumbnail photos in the press were one's chief exposure to your heroes... his name was Morne Coertser.
