White possums(?), winter blues and Redneck outhouses...21 Jul '09 4:41 am
An eclectic thread in the true Moosey's tradition! Dixie, I agree with Christopher. I could not share your blues when your winter views are so lovely. But I know what you mean - today we had a biting wind and some cloud, and there were moments when I found my view over the water genuinely miserable, whereas usually I love the subtle neutrals of winter...
Sir Christopher - you have introduced me to a whole new concept of bliss. Instead of reading on the loo I too want to go on a scenic country drive - although I guess the reality might be somewhat dusty...
And as for that spooky-friendly creature of yours, Dixie, he really took my breath away. Like Casper the friendly ghost he was suddenly there, winking at me, and your name was hidden - a most effective introduction!
As far as winter work goes, my first rose-bed is pruned and composted, a second pruned - and I am full of plans: "THIS will be the year in which my roses are loved, fed, weeded and fully appreciated!" I was looking at pictures taken in the Rondel in the late 90s recently, and scanned... I am ashamed to think of what that garden looks like now. A final attempt at resurrection this year... if it doesn't work I shall remove most if not all the roses, some to more sunny and spacious quarters (it has been a revelation to see how the surrounding trees have grown since the 90s!)and turn the Rondel into a formal hosta and hellebore garden - or something like that...

Well,Jack, and all you other aspiring red necks, that model was built from a prototype. Yes, there are real trucks like that.
In fact it is not such an unusual thing to do. Lots have done it. They are called House Trucks and some are regular rolling palaces. Check out this link.

It's been going on a long time. check this out.

To satisfy your curiosity I am including the photo that inspired me to build my model.
Enjoy dreaming.

I love it Christopher! As the pic below will show you, I relate hugely to the snail instinct... but 'tis the looo what dooo 't for me in yer model...

Talbot - my home for 5 months.jpg
I tell in my "Europe'95" post of my home for 5 of 6 months in Europe - the 1st with friends & finding the vehicle. I'd give my soul for one just like it, but motorhomes - especially those IN the vehicle body not caravany - are scarce in SA!

I love it too !
A crowd always gathers when the gypsy trucks come through towns-there is something really fascinating about the decorations, the skill in fitting everything together, the hand-made accessories, and the individual names they are given. Many people spend their retiremnet dreams travelling in these
One of the NZ sites is Gypsy fair NZ,and this is where I collected these pics

Wooden Campers and such-like.21 Jul '09 12:48 pm
I went to the first of the web pages you posted Christopher and spent nearly an hour seeing pictures of a truck-house built back in 1975 in Oregon. I once built my own .. I guess you'd call it a camper shell for an old International step-side pick-up. I made it super light with mostly 2 by 2's and 1 by 2's for framing and a 1/4 inch thick sheet exterior redwood siding which I covered with a fiberglass coating. Lia's still tells the story about our first date when I picked her up in an old pickup with what she called a doghouse on the back. I don't think she was impressed. The fact that she had to slide over to the passenger side because the other door didn't work probably didn't do me much good either. On the other hand she always says that the fact that I invited her for tea rather than coffee was what got my foot in the door. Our second date was a picnic by a lake for which I picked her up with my Triumph Trident motorcycle. After that I was her "motorcycle man", not the guy with the doghouse on his truck.

Interesting strategy, Mark... the only way Lia could escape you was through your door! Now for a pic of your 'doghouse'?
Hey! Where has all the glum gone!

Wowza!21 Jul '09 6:16 pm
Look at the curves in those roof joists! Very impressive.
I'm really appreciating the logic of this thread. Cold, gloomyness, truck-houses, dating stories, puppets. It all adds up.

old Woodies21 Jul '09 8:20 pm
I went straight to the old woodies pages.Actually i was hoping to find a pic of my Dad's Morris 8 series E wooden panel van.It had to be started with a crank. The back seat just sat on the wooden floor, and slid from side to side as we went around corners,or slid forwards if he braked. You had to stick your arm out the window for hand signals. Those were great days.
Now-we need a lovely wedding too.
My daughter and her husband had old woodies for their wedding cars nearly 10 years ago...They are Morris minors.
