Yet Another Newby15 May '08 4:08 pm
Hi to all.
I have been watching Moosey's site for some time and have finally plucked up the nerve to join in the fun!
Still wondering if I'll ever be able to get an avitar small enough or be able to work out how to post pics (all the usual new comer issues!) but at least I'm officially part of the site...
Such a wonderfully varied bunch of gardens and gardening folk. I'm looking forward to getting to know you and your gardens better.

It is great to see all the new blood! You'll figure it all out soon enough. Luckily you can't break anything in the process!

Taupaki...16 May '08 8:25 am
...is just north of Auckland next to Kumeu. I live a stones throw from Goose! It is a very pretty rural place full of townies that have run away from the city, so much of it is divided into lifestyle blocks of 10 or 20 acres. I live on 14 acres with my long-suffering ex-city slicker bloke, 6 month old baby Theo, a neurotic tabby Hector, a few horses, 2 geese, a handful of weanling cattle, and some chickens. And I love it!

Young people agardening in a beautiful spot! I approve. And I love the still young trees giving autumn colour. They are at an age where every year is going to bring a dramatic improvement in impact. One of the best things I did in my life was to plant trees in my twenties and thirties. In my fifties I'm seeing the benefits!
I wish you a long, involved and happy association with the Moosey crowd!

Thanks Jack17 May '08 3:41 pm
Thanks for your nice words Jack.
Yes, most of the trees are only 9 or 10 years old - except some of the palms and the shelter belts(they are considerably older). We thought everything was finally looking more 'grown up' but you spotted it immediately!
The line of low orange trees are a double row of Japanese cherries lining part of our driveway. They are a terrible choice for this position - a big blunder made by owners in the past. They are too close (flanked by fencing) and weepy, and scrape the cars as they drive down it. The horse trucks must stop at the cattle yards as they are unable to fit along this stretch at all. In the spring they flower well but are an awful shade of bright pink that clashes with just about everything else on the property (I have nothing against pink but these are not a nice pink at all!). The flowers last a week or so before the spring winds blow them asunder and we get to drive on a pink carpet - very girly and romantic but fleeting.
As you can tell, we are not huge fans of these trees!! We are considering taking them out. This is a real shame as it is no fault of their own, just a silly error on behalf of silly short-sighted people. To make matters worse, this Autumn they have put on the best display yet and are truly fantastic in their orange robes. We wonder if they've heard the rumours!!

Thanks - at some stage I will pluck up the courage to show actual gardens but as I wander 'round the place I see nothing but Autumn mess - scruffy borders, things needing dead-heading, clearing up, hacking back, taken out, etc. That's without mentioning the weeds!
