Autumn variety3 May '08 6:06 pm
Hi and thank you to everyone!!
You're right about the variety of trees, Christopher, I have seeked out and hunted down autumn foliage for over 25 years now and I have (he said modestly) the best collection I know of in South Africa. In addition my garden is ideal to bring out the best of autumn colouring, especially down near the water: there is plenty of sun (and even reflected sunlight) with high daytime temperatures, combined with cold nights where the mists that develop over the low-lying areas has for weeks meant that leaf surface temperatures are well below 10 degrees at night.
Yesterday I got caught up in photographing the row of Japanese maples (Acer palmatum) on the fountain stream. I think their autumn garb must be the highlight of the gardening year. (Did I say that What about the roses?!?!)

Panorama3 May '08 8:09 pm
Another dull day, and windy, after a windy night... I am worried there will be nothing left of autumn when we have a Rotary club social here tomorrow week
However there was a little more light a few minutes back, and the wet leaves glowed, so I took some shots - then tried to merge them in Canon Photostitch and EUREKA! it could be done! As I wasn't thinking off merging them at the time (and it is now quite misty) they jump about a bit on the vertical plane, but I rather like the effect! Open the pic, then enlarge it to 100%, then slowly pan across the photo for a more realistic effect than when one sees everything from left to right all at once.

Sunday walk5 May '08 4:28 pm
A beautiful afternoon with patchy sun. I took 280 photos in 100 minutes, almost all of which I'll keep. Here are a first few to share.

Beautiful light, and trees, and everything. It's such a great time of the year, proper autumn is.

Jack I just love your fall color! The panorama turned out great. You could probably crop out the ragged edges, but it is wonderful just the way it is. And that shot across the dam would make a beautiful painting for the artist with enough talent to capture those colors.
I agree that you have the most amazing fall color and it does almost outshine the roses.

Getting back to last Sunday9 May '08 7:27 am
Here are some more pics. The panorama from the top of the meadow shows the startling richness of colour in the group of liquodambers to the right. Yes, I have pushed up the saturation; yes, that is really what it looks like. It hits you between the eyes with the subtlety of - well of what? An American/Australian muscle car? Madonna? A soap opera? Darn - none of those images do justice to my garden!
Then I take you into a section of the garden on the furthest boundery that doesn't feature too often in my photographs, but is one of the most interesting at this season - and at any season for a quercoholic!

Quercoholic, I like that.
I just want to walk into that fourth picture and sit down.

Sunday's walk (continued)10 May '08 4:49 am
In the rather lengthy business of sharing Sunday's walk, I am now on the opposite side of the dam (lake - I really wish I could get into calling it a lake. But it aint quite... it's too small!)(and too big for a pond) (Oh shut up,Jack)
These first pics look back towards the four liquodambers which form the central view to the right from my house, so I am at the upper reaches of the dam on the opposite side. (yeh, sure, that makes sense!)
