Another autumn5 Apr '08 8:15 am
And so the seasons progress... It was definitely an autumn view from my parents' stoep (veranda) last Sunday afternoon. I just love the shimmering quality on a clear afternoon as millions of leaves catch the light!

Ant on Watsonia tightly cropped.jpg
Two completely different shots: I was taking detail pics of some wild pink watsonias in the arboretum and did not even notice the ant that had come along to add to my composition

And here is the plant itself. What a pleasant surprise coming across it, as I don't recall one growing here before. They are of the most beautiful and dramatic of our local bulbs.

Bug on lobelia.jpg
Lastly one of those supermacros where I was most likely squashing the poor bug up against the flower. It was no more than 1.5mm long, and the minute and lovely wild lobelia perhaps 8 x 10mm - less than 1/2inch in height!

I love the watsonias. They are so beautiful.
Nasty looking ant. Is that a fire ant? Perhaps a red ant?
I was being climbed over by ants last night as I sat here at my computer, but they are only common black ants. They invade every spring until the food source develops outside and then they leave us alone. Right now the scouts are out and they keep finding new ways into my kitchen. I keep blocking their way with ant powder. They are so in-trenched I think it would be impossible to get rid of them, but on the good side, they do help open our peonies.

Hee hee. Make your autumn colours shimmer and shine and glow! Amaze your friends. First click the sneaky little photoshop button called automatic contrast, then hit the saturation button - up you go, don't be shy, maybe to a 4 or a 5... Hee hee!
dear Jack, Hope your autumn is colourful and stuff doen't blow off too soon. Take lots and lots of pix. And play with photoshop - honestly, it does some amazing things. Cheers, M

Autumn blues14 Apr '08 7:07 am
Besides the fact that I'm getting ever sicker from an awful coughing cold, now in its third week, my new camera is broken - one of the battery contacts is damaged. That means that instead of stitching wonderfully wide autumn panoramas, I am using my old camera which has an erratic focus problem so only half the pics are usable. So can you blame me for taking Moosey at her word and pumping up the colour saturation to give early autumn the effect of full on splendour, all in order to dispel the blues...

Sorry to hear that both you and your new camera aren't doing too well. The photos are lovely. How wonderful to have such an expanse of water. Lovely view. I hope you feel better soon.

Jack, I know that this isn't a race, but -
Your autumn is beating my autumn - just like your spring (remember the wisteria and the maples) beat mine. I'd say you are two to three weeks ahead. I guess this makes up for the fact that we are - is it 10 hours? ahead and got things like the millenium sun before you, hee hee.
Everything boils down to altitude, latitude and longitude - aargh! it's like maths!
Cheers, and I love seeing the photos. Hope you are well now, and not too 'coughy'. Love to the dogs.

You left something out of the mix, Moosey!15 Apr '08 7:03 pm
"Everything boils down to altitude, latitude and longitude" you said, Moosey. The older I get the more I believe there is an even more important ingredient, no matter what: ATTITUDE!
LOL

Hi Alana!18 Apr '08 7:07 pm
Welcome to the forums and thank you for your kind comments! Tell (and show?) us a bit more about yourself and your gardening activities!
This afternoon the local Garden Club is meeting in my garden. I feel a bit of a charlatan, as I don't think I've spent ten hours doing serious gardening this year, school currently taking about 55 hours a week of my time - that is time spent at school, never mind things like marking and prep! Luckily the weather is fine and autumn is doing its thing beautifully. I'll smile and come up with my usual line: "you must all try to see the garden as it exists in my head..."
Luckily my staff have been wonderful, setting everything up and doing some cosmetic work around the house. Young Amos Letsoalo officially took over at the beginning of the year as foreman, and we said goodbye to his predecessor, Phineas Mogwale, at the end of last month when he went on retirement. Within days there was a serious question only he could answer... I am very pleased with the results my younger, more energetic and educated but much reduced in number staff are achieving around the farm and garden with the help of greater mechanisation than we've ever had before.
