We were discussing North-South on another thread here-I can't remember where. So here is something for friends and interested strangers.
The Australian tourism office gets enquiries from all over the world...
From the USA~'Which direction is North in Australia ?'
Answer from tourism office~'Face South, and then turn 180 degrees.Contact us when you get here and we'll send you the rest of the directions.'

I got asked which way was East the other day here.. went up to see my little brother in Kalgoorlie.. which is in the middle of nowhere and is generally described as red dust and drunken miners.
While I was there we went for a walk through a national park type thing, 4 kms of bush walks which is very very different to bush anywhere else I have been but quite fascinating all the same. We stood on this viewing platform and looked over the area, the only way I could tell which was was East was by the sun, as the rest of it looked so similiar. Less than five kms out of town and you couldn't find any identifying features. I can see why it is so easy to get lost in the outback at times. If it had been overcast I wouldn't have had the foggiest idea, so I can easily see why the tourism office's answer is the best one out <g>
Features of the bush walk.. they actually had water fountains beside the trail, the plants were labelled in places very clearly with the names and a story about the tree or bush..and some had activities to go with it. The trail was some kind of pebbles imbedded in concrete very nice to walk on and would have been good for wheel chairs as well, although there were some hilly bits. Obviously has native animals around still, though not in evidence in 40 odd degree heat which it was when we were walking. Did find a fragment of snake skin though which looked like it had huge scales.
Anyway yeah I got diverted <g> thanks for the smile. |
