16 Jan '08 6:18 am They will rot in the ground if the drainage is not good.I leave mine in the ground, but show growers lift them, divide, and store in sawdust till Spring(October)
GG-I do like your salmon stargazer.(Hi Deb !)They are so rewarding for not much effort such as roses, but with effort will be gorgeous. It is funny for the average viewer to see umbrellas over the red dahlias in summer.
There are several varieties of dahlias and each have sizes from miniature to large. The rounded ones are decorative, and the pointed ones are cactus, with other specific varieties such as orchid or fimbriated.
The judges go around with special wire loops to strictly measure the sizes, whether they be miniature or small or large or medium.for instance, miniature decs which are my favourite are up to 115 mm diameter, and small are between 115-155 mm diameter.
A good site to make your mouth water is 'Belle fleur dahlias NZ'which is where I get mine from.
A catalogue entry-I hope it turns out.

18 Jan '08 3:39 pm You've inspired me to race out with camera and take some dahlia pix here. Unfortunately I inherited all of mine - and the bees have done such a great hybridising job I seem to have every shade of red possible. I love them, but oh boy they sulk after a couple of days with the dry norwest wind.
cheers

Your Jesse G. Dahlia makes my tree dahlias look puny.
18 Jan '08 3:48 pm It looks as though it is much taller than the tree or the man behind it. The flower alone has got to be a meter across. I've got to get one!

Dahlia Queens!!
25 Jan '08 7:16 am Dear Dixie, I well remember your Dahlia-love, almost since 2 years ago!! I was admiring you then, because the tall ones need a lot of care , and , generally, they need to be really occupied by them, in order to see them thriving!! And your Dahlias ARE thriving!!! Such Beauties!!!

26 Jan '08 8:54 pm Do you hire out your dahlia-staker? I could pay towards the cost of the stakes...
