Hi Liza thanks for the welcome
Well the theory was good that I might get a sleep in, but GP decided he had to work this morning, and because I had picked him up last night after he had had a few beers it meant I had to be up as well to drop him off.. ahh well, a good excuse to be out talking to my plants in the early morning sunshine and to give them a quick water.
The intention was there anyway, quick turned out to be not so fast, but trickling water into ferns at slow speed was a good starting point. Next step is to work out how to get rid of the nasties I found in amongst one that was given to me suspect the nasties were imported into my garden with it... it looks like a very fine version of a haresfoot but without the runners, I can't remember the name of the pest but it has a hard brown covering, I guess some sort of scale insect which sucks the sap.. quarantining it will do for a start and I may try white oil.. hope that works.
Wooohooo my courgette plants have flowers, and little fruit that are actually starting to get bigger... the beans have these really delicate lilac coloured flowers and while they are still only a foot high looks like I may have beans on those before too much longer. Is anyone else finding that a lot of the seed varieties around now that are readily available are dwarf or intended to be small and compact ? I have been having to really hunt to find the older style vegetables.
I finally got around to planting out the dianthus seedlings as well, I cheated and bought some from the store in a punnet, but I had grown some from seed that are meant to be black with white edges as well... so hopefully this suddenly dry weather doesn't hit them too hard.
The other thing that has made me smile this week is the hoya I have in a basket out the back 'krinkle' has flowered finally.. and it has a wierd smell.. anyone ever come across a hoya that smells like chocolate before ??? |

Greetings from good ol' Dunedin, Mydnyght! Sawyers Bay and Roseneath certainly do have an amazing microclimate. I'm sure there's nothing else in Dunedin to match it. I've seen things growing there that I've never seen growing as well (or at all) anywhere else in the region. And they always produce the very first local new potatoes! Delicious! |

New Seasons14 Jan '08 3:36 pm
Hope everyone had a great Xmas season and the New Year brings many blessings and wonderful things into your lives. It's been a while since I posted.. my computer decided to pull one of it's normal stunts on me. I have a bad habit of killing electronic things without even trying, so not only did I lose it for well over a week while they replaced the motherboard, but I now cannot use the usb ports, so for now.. no new photos.
The vege garden is going well, I have had cucumbers, beans, chillis.. lots of.. aubergines, courgettes and capsicums out of it, and phenominal amounts of tomatoes off the plants. nothing better than fresh veges straight from the garden.
GP is slowly becomming happier I am getting some of the extraneous plants in pots organised.. and have given away a few to people who will apreciate them. Had so many chilli plants my brother and sister in law got a couple.. ended up with a case of the vanishing chilli plants as they came down here for Christmas, and the people camping at the house had a dog that ate the avacado plant.. but the chilli plants they came back to empty pots.. not even dirt in them, and they should have been protected from the dog..
The ferns and shade loving plants are now happily down the side of the house in the cooler area, I need to put a couple of blue chairs down there I think and get rid of the pepper tree which all the seeds that drop seem to grow, quite a pretty tree, but where it is it is a pain. Have had to shift the lemon grass to a higher spot, on GPs gardening bench, our lovely kelpie thinks it is grown just for her to eat seeing it is the only long grass in the place.
Anyway back to the garden I need to water the plants I repotted yesterday and the seeds I planted out. Two mango and lettuce and fluffy sunflowers.
Tomatyr nice to meet someone from home, and I miss the new potatoes, was one thing I really felt was missing from the Christmas table. |
