I've decided to rechristen our male pup: (our = my and Phineas' pup, but I seem to have him more and more!!) His name is no longer Winston, but Habana, Son of Montgomery. Enough said.

Okay Jack, explain please. What does Habana mean? Whatever his name, he is still a dear little fellow and so is Montgomery. Also, what is the Springbok logo emblamatic of? They are beautiful animals and truly worthy of being an emblam.

Every Kiwi knows what a Springbok is.
The big game starts in an hour and a half--many people think the Springboks will win.
It is a beautiful animal,Faith, and the South Africans have it as a symbol when playing rugby,or should rugby have a capital R !Is it used in other sports too Jack ?

Thanks Dixie for enlightening me. I now see that this was a somewhat subtle way of crowing over his local favorites. I suppose it was a gentle jab at the head gardener and her All Blacks.

You got it, Faith!
Add to which that Monty was named after the WW2 general, not the South African rugby player who the Head Gardener admires for more than just his rugby prowess. However she has a soft spot for my Monty because of his name... Bryan Habana is the current hero of South African rugby, and contributed hugely to the Springbok victory, although he failed last night to score the try that would have given him a world record number of World Cup tries.
Anyway: victory it was, even if not spectacularly so. The Boks (now only used for rugby, but in the old SA for all national teams) played well at times, but perhaps the English played well more often. Yet the Boks led all the way and won 15-6.
But, as a non-fan of TV sport, may I admit: I watched the final game of the '95 world cup played in SA from London, and when Nelson Mandela, president of the still very new New South Africa came out jubilently in his Springbok jersey, I WEPT! That day we crossed a threshold as a country. Last night we only won the World Cup.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!23 Oct '07 9:49 pm
Many many congrats to you and all South Africans, Jack! It was a great game and, though I say it myself, could have gone either way, but in the end it was your victory and very well deserved (although I'm sure it was a try!! ).
I must admit that, during the medal ceremony, I was in tears from the look on your captain's face (sorry, can't remember his name ) - he was just in that place of deep contentment and serenity – oh, it was so inspiring!
